|This text analysis study focused on the novel Kapten Hassan Wira Bangsa (KHWB) to survey and identify the value content in Kurikulum Bersepadu Sekolah Menengah (KBSM). This novel is published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) in 2000 and penned by Harun Johari, a local author. It was chosen by a committee appointed by Pusat Perkembangan Kurikulum (PPK) after serious procedural selection as a text for literature component as it is filled with KBSM values. This novel is a compulsory for teachers and Form 2 students in schools in the northern zone as a part of Bahasa Melayu teaching and learning support. The main purpose of this study is to prove whether KHWB really suits the values in KBSM or otherwise. In reaching that purpose 5 research questions based on study objective are formed. The research questions touch on the form of medium in the novel forming as value channel, the kind of KBSM values carried by the identified medium, the highlighted and unhighlighted values aspect in KBSM and the differences between the two aspects analysed in frequency and percentage. Readings on KHWB were done repeatedly and the data relevant to the study were gathered and recorded into 5 study forms and KBSM values checklist prepared for the study. The data gathered then were analysed based on research questions and extended through discussion. The analysis then would form a conclusion on whether KHWB qualify as a reading text for lower secondary Bahasa Melayu literature component or not. This study covers 3 chapters. Chapter 1 describes research background, statement of problem, research objective, research question, significance of research, research limitation and definition of terminologies used in the research. Chapter 2 traces other sources that have helped support this study. Among the things studied are the aspect of Kurikulum Baharu Bahasa Melayu Sekolah Menengah (revised edition), literature component in the curriculum, values in education, values theories, literature material as a tool for value education, values absorption through literature component and past researches on the function of literature as a vehicle for values in education. Chapter 3 displays research methodology used, covering research framework, method of data analysis, research sample, research instrument and data collection procedures and data analysis. It is my hope that this effort could help improve the implementation of literature component to ensure that it is still relevant as an agent to the National Education Philosophy.|
