Abstract : Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris |
The study aims to investigate the extent to what and how the government of Malaysia has been
providing educational opportunities for children and young people who are being detained within
the prisons institutions since 2013. The study adopted a qualitative methodology by interviewing
relevant officials, teachers (educators) as well as young offenders who pursue studies while being
imprisoned in Malaysia prisons institutions. In addition, researchers have undertaken some
observations towards gaining the data regarding the implementation of the provisions of
educational opportunities for children and young people within the Malaysia prisons institutions. In
conclusion, the data remarked that, among others; first, many positive efforts were successfully
implemented by the Malaysia Prisons Department since 2103 till date particularly towards
improving the provision of educational opportunities for children and young people detained in
prisons institutions in Malaysia; secondly, the Malaysia Prisons Department is aware of some of
the setbacks faced by the department when implementing policies related to the provision of
education for youths pursuing learning activities whilst imprisoned; and finally, the Malaysia
Prisons Department realizes that the arising barriers can be well managed and resolved through a
consistent understanding of the various Malaysian government departments pertaining to youth in
Malaysia as well as the Prisons Department of Malaysia. |
