Abstract : Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris |
This study examines the integration of twenty-first century skills among Arts
Education Master Trainers at the Sekolah Seni Malaysia Kuala Lumpur. The focus of
this study is related to the instructional methodologies for the Arts Education subject
consisting of Visual Art, Music, Dance and Performing Arts. The instructional methods
examined in this study included teachers’ knowledge and teachers’ competencies. The
study utilised mixed-method case study approach. A survey was conducted by using
questionnaire as a research instrument. A total of eight Arts Education Master Trainers
and 154 students were involved in this survey. The sample was chosen randomly. The
data was analysed by using descriptive analysis consisting of mean, percentage and
standard deviation. The data was then tabulated and interpreted. This was followed by
a focus-group interview and three-phase interview based on Seidman’s Model were
also conducted among eight Arts Education Master Trainers: Three from Visual Art;
Two from Music; Two from Dance and One from Theatre. Findings from the study
show that teachers’ understandings and teachers’ competencies are closely related.
However, due to lack of formal training, 87.5% of the teacher respondents were not
able to integrate the twenty-first century learning skills accordingly. Survey findings
suggest that a student-centred form of instruction is being enacted as well as the
teacher-centred or "traditional" form of instruction. The Master Trainers believe that
"hybrid" form of instruction as more effective compared to the teacher or studentcentred
methods. Findings also indicate that the Master Trainers were concerned about
the enhancement of skills through production of artwork. They believe that all the
twenty-first century skills are embedded naturally throughout the creative process of
making an artwork. Other significant findings included Master Trainers’ choice on
hands-on and practical activities. The adoption of technology is a factor that
contributes to the enhancement of student’s learning.
