Collected in the Urban Spectre are six essays (five being Chinese translations and one originally written in Chinese) of the late Dr. Esther MK Cheung (1958-2015) on Hong Kong films and urban problems. The aim of this compilation and translation is to construct a framework for analyzing Hong Kong films – spectral analysis or spectral critique, so as to guide more Chinese readers to ponder on the following question: How and why has there been a lasting presence of a lingering crisis consciousness, “homeless/rootless” feelings, and illusion of ruins in Hong Kong films since the late 1970s? This paper is divided into two parts. The first part interprets the references of “phantasmagoria”, “spectre” or “uncanny” in the book, and examines how the author manipulates the “spectral critique”. Extending from this book, the second part ruminates on whether Hong Kong films continue to be phantasmagoria (the discussion in the book stops at the films in 2010), and whether we can borrow the author’s “spectral vision” to portray a phantasmagoric map of sinophone cinemas since the late 20th century. |
