The government expenditure for the education sector had escalated over the period. Meanwhile, the increment in private cost, that is the cost borne by parents cannot be fully determined due to the unavailability of a comprehensive assessment. This study determined the private cost of education for primary school from Year 1 to Year 6 for a period of one school year. Private cost assessment is also done according to type of school, level of education and sosio economic factor. Apart from that, this study also looked into the parents perception towards the degree of burden incurred in private cost. This study utilized the "ingredient cost" method, whereas a set of questionaire was developed to elucidate the cost of schooling needs. The study sample comprised three groups, they were; parents of pupils from Sekolah Kebangsaan, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil. The outcome of this study showed the presence of a positive relationship between level of schooling and total private costs. The cost of schooling borne by the parents and guardians showed a significant difference according to type of school, school status, gender, year of schooling and level of household income. Most of the respondents believed the private cost for primary school is burdensome. |
