3351 | 2021 article | The optical performance of holmium oxide doped tellurite glass for potential optical fiber Muhammad Noorazlan Abd Azis Borotellurite glass had been widely applied in the field of optical communications and devices. In this work, holmium oxides doped borotellurite glass had been successfully fabricated via conventional melt-quenched technique. The structural properties of holmium doped tellurite glass were found using x-ray diffraction (XRD) method. The nonexistence of sharp peaks in XRD pattern shows that the inclusion of holmium tellurite glass leads to the formation long range of disorderness. The optical properties of the glass system such as refractive index and optical band gap energy are investigated using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The value of refractive index is found in nonlinear trend along with holmium oxides concentration. It is found that the refractive index is more than 2 at 0.01, 0.03 and 0.04 of holmium concentrations. The optical band gap energy was found in similar trend with refractive index which is in nonlinear pattern. ? 2021 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland... 413 hits |
3352 | 2021 article | The operational role of remote sensing in assessing and predicting land use/land cover and seasonal land surface temperature using machine learning algorithms in Rajshahi, Bangladesh Zullyadini A. Rahaman Human activity has boosted carbon dioxide emissions, causing temperatures to rise. The average temperature on Earth is roughly 15C, but it has been much higher and lower in the past. There are natural climatic changes, but experts say temperatures are already rising faster than at any other period in history. Unplanned urbanization can sometimes backfire, causing negative consequences that harm the economy and contribute to environmental damages, especially in developing countries like Bangladesh. Because of the strong association between land use/land cover and land surface temperature (LST), the study attempted to analyze and estimate LULC and seasonal (both summer and winter) LSTs using Landsat satellite images at 5-year intervals from 1995 to 2020. Later, the study forecasted both LULC and seasonal LSTs for 2030 and 2040 using cellular automata (CA) and artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms for Rajshahi district. As supporting parameters for determining the magnitude of ..... 402 hits |

3356 | 2021 article | The limitations of conducting collaborative argumentation when teaching argumentative essays in Malaysian secondary schools Aireen Aina Bahari The writing of argumentative essays promotes higher-order thinking skills amongst students regardless of their level of studying only when it involves collaborative argumentation. Hence, argumentation researchers recommend that teachers use group argumentation to teach argumentative essays since Vygotsky?s sociocultural theory believed that group argumentation improves students? writing skills. The study?s objective is to explore the use of group argumentation during the teaching of argumentative essays in English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms in Malaysia. Hence, the involvement of practitioners is significant so that the full extent of the problem is known rather than being interpreted solely by researchers. This qualitative study was conducted on nine ESL teachers through convenience sampling. Data was collected through online interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings demonstrated that ESL teachers did not practice group argumentation when teaching argumen..... 598 hits |

3360 | 2021 article | The implications of securitising health crises: the case of Southeast Asia Nadirah Mohd Azmi This article examined the consequences of linking health as a regional security issue. Securitisation Theory (hereinafter ST) is an innovative approach to understand how Non-Traditional Security (from now on NTS) is deemed as a posing threat to a referent object. Prioritising NTS issue as a security threat enables the issue to receive a higher degree of importance from policymakers, thereby gathering the resources needed in dealing with the threat. However, addressing NTS issues also bring negative implications; it can divert attention from more concerning issues. This article, therefore, investigated the consequences of securitising health issues at the Southeast Asian level. This was done through triangulating academic materials, ASEAN?s official statements, and semi-structured elite interviews on Southeast Asian health policy discourses between 1967 and 2010. This study argues that while there are some disadvantages to regional efforts in constructing pandemic disease as a regional ..... 353 hits |
