2020 Article | The impact of metalinguistic corrective feedback on Iranian EFL learners acquisition of the hypothetical conditional Gharanjik, Nourollah Several recent works have shown the efficacy of written corrective feedback (WCF) as a method in improving ESL/EFL learners’ grammatical accuracy. Using a quasiexperimental design, this study aims at investigating the effect of metalinguistic explanation (ME) corrective feedback as a form focused instruction on Iranian high school students’ use of the hypothetical conditional in their writing. Fifty high school students were given the Oxford placement test. Based on the results, 34 of them were chosen to be homogenous in terms of language proficiency. The students were then randomly assigned to two groups, one experimental and one control group. The experimental group received the treatment (ME) after each guided writing practice but the control group did not. The results of independent samples t-test showed that students in the experimental group significantly outperformed students in the other group in the accurate use of the grammatical feature. The findings have some implicatio..... 809 hits
2020 Article | The effect of genre approach on Malaysian Orang Asli EFL students descriptive writing Phan, Jonathan The indigenous Orang Asli in Malaysia who do not use English on a daily basis consequently have low English proficiency and poor writing skills. Their existing EFL situation coupled with the ongoing problems in gaining access to proper education further stifles their language development. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the genre approach in improving secondary Orang Asli EFL students’ descriptive writing, and their perceptions of using the genre approach as a framework to overcome challenges in learning descriptive writing. This quasi-experimental study was conducted in a secondary school in Pahang, Malaysia. Quantitative data is sourced from students’ pre-test and post-test scores, and also a self-report questionnaire on their perceptions towards the genre approach. The approach shows evidence of improvement in students’ descriptive writing and could have a larger effect than the process approach currently taught in schools. Their perception towards the approach..... 1101 hits

It exposes how Albee sublimates his sufferings and reveals his life via his dramatic works. The study also shows the traumatic experiences which Albee undergoes during his childhood, a matter that affects his behaviour and actions and leaves a deep scar on his own psyche. Besides, it displays how the author sketches his fictional characters to express his unconscious mind, bruised ego and troubled childhood. Further, the study exposes the defence mechanism the playwright takes up to legitimize his suppressed wishes and undesirable impulses. The aforementioned plays are selected because they are autobiographical and self-r..... 952 hits |
2020 Article | Systematic review: writing approaches in the teaching of writing skills Venissa Ugun This paper presents a systematic review of relevant published studies on teaching of writing strategies in developing ESL learners’ writing skills from year 2000 to 2020. This systematic review attempts to address two research questions, i.e what writing strategies should be taught to primary ESL learners to improve their writing skills and how to plan effective writing strategies for developing writing skills. Twenty studies were systematically reviewed and revealed that there are 5 approaches in the teaching of writing strategy namely as product based, process based, post process, genre based and process genre based. Besides that, scaffolding technique along with the usage of visual through picture technique and brainstorming stage are among the activities. The findings of this study also indicates that selecting of approaches should consider the needs and proficiency level of the learners. Teachers are suggested to integrate more than one approach in order to fulfill the learnersâ..... 994 hits

2020 Article | Kleinian psychological light on W. S. Maughams Liza of Lambeth Shabrang, Hoda This paper explores a psychological reading of W. Somerset Maugham’s first novel Liza of Lambeth based on Melanie Klein’s notions of object relations theory. Maugham’s works illustrate the simple life of people who are woven to their destructive ways of living and depict their symptomatic relationships. These sorts of self-damaging and wrong objects selections are the consequences of incomplete childhood prototypes with parents which are influential throughout these people’s lifespan. In Klein’s term these may be the result of projective identification and depressive position. Although Maugham attempts to show his protagonists as successful people, they always choose the wrong partners for their relationships. On the surface this is not a problem for them, but in the deeper layers it shows itself as the main issue for characters to prevent them from gaining the love-life they deserve. This study analyses the effect of object relations in Maugham’s main character’s relatio..... 698 hits
