| 2017 article | PhD thesis examination report: horror upon horror Azham Md. Ali With an almost four main sections largely untouched and the fact that the following two final sections have seen just three paragraphs and part of a sentence deleted, this paper is an almost exact version of the report issued in the written examination of a PhD thesis. Comprising of seven sections in total including the introduction, it details out in the middle four sections the four types of problems found in the concerned thesis: first, problems of writing such as the lack of clarity, nonexistent flows and careless write ups; second, research fundamentals’problems covering topics such as the conceptual framework, hypotheses and data analyses; third, problems with the presentation for parts of the thesis such as the table of contents and the references; and, fourth, extreme problems which should have never ever been committed for one reason or another – hence, they are labeled as the totally, totally nauseating problems a.k.a. the unpardonable sins! 3 | 2021 article | Effects of the Wall-Faced seating arrangement strategy on the behavioural patterns of the students in the architecture thesis design studio Tafahomi, Rahman The results of the exercise on the Wall-Faced seating arrangement in an architecture thesis design studio reveal the positive effects on the progress, concentration, and design of the students. The seating arrangement encouraged the students for more design products and development through increase the sense of competition. The seating arrangement changed the concentration of the students from the central part of the studio as a location for social interaction toward the drawing board as the learning target of the studio with more concentration on the drawing boards. The seating arrangement changes the concentration from the people in the studio as subject to the drawing board and design development as the object. In the new seating from the level of the collaboration between the students enhanced and the students communicated consistency to enhance the level of the design project in the studio. The research findings reveal that the students present five behavioural patterns in the des..... 347 hits |
| 2021 article | Syntactic complexity of MA thesis and PhD dissertation abstracts written by native and non-native speakers of English Ebrahimi, Seyed Foad Academic texts have been characterized by the high number of noun phrases; however, to the best the researcher's knowledge, no prior study has investigated the syntactic complexity of noun phrases in abstracts written by native and non-native MA and PhD applied linguistics students. In an attempt to fill this gap, a corpus of 40 abstracts written by native and non-native MA and PhD applied linguistics students was collected and examined. Using two computer applications (L2SCA and TAASSC), the researcher analyzed the corpus to pinpoint possible differences. The findings of this study showed that there were some similarities and differences between the syntactic structures employed in the abstracts of native and non-native MA and PhD students. The results showed that noun phrase syntactic complexity measures (examined through TAASSC) were not successful in differentiating native versus non-native and MA versus PhD writers. The findings suggest that other measures rather than noun phrase ..... 463 hits |
| 2010 thesis | High energy density fuels derived from Mallee Biomass: fuel properties and implications Hanisom Abdullah Mallee Biomass is considered to be a second-generation renewable feedstock in Australia and will play an important role in bioenergy development in Australia. Its production is of large-scale, low cost, small carbon footprint and high energy efficiency. However, biomass as a direct fuel is widely dispersed, bulky, fibrous and of high moisture content and low energy density. High logistic cost, poor grindability and mismatch of fuel property with coal are some of the key issues that impede biomass utilisation for power generation. Therefore, innovations are in urgent need to improve biomass volumetric energy densification, grindability and good fuel matching if co-fired with coal. Biomass pyrolysis is a flexible and low-cost approach that can be deployed for this purpose. Via pyrolysis, the bulky biomass can be converted to biomass-derived high-energy-density fuels such as biochar and/or biooil. So far there has been a lack of fundamental understanding of mallee biomass pyrolysis and pr..... 919 hits |
| 2014 thesis | A study of new word-formation of Tamil language in Malaysia Muniisvaran Kumar This thesis furnishes a clear idea on the current scenario of word-formation in Tamil, particularly in the Malaysian context. A total of 496 words have been collected as data for this study from the nationwide published Malaysian Tamil newspaper; 'Malaysia Nanban'. This study by and large answered technical questions: word-formation processes, genres and classes of words and identifying linguistic and grammatical weakness and conflicts. Field study has been conducted to answer social questions such as: attitudes of language users, their expectation and suggestions for better word-formation in Tamil. It was found that the language users were not very satisfied with the current progress of word-formation in Tamil. The result obtained from the questionnaire demonstrates that the language users are supportive of language development, particularly in word-formation. The analysis of this study has been divided into three sections based on the source of data viz. newspaper, questionnaire and ..... 1586 hits |

| 2004 thesis | Analisis komponen makna kata adjektif deria bahasa Melayu Salihah Ab Patah This thesis aims to study adjectives in the Malay language with particular focus on adjectives related to senses. 38 adjectives have been chosen as sample for this study. Words with high levels of synonymity leads to share a number of fetures compared to a low level of synonymity. The synonymity of words can be seen clearly based on the similarity of features with is symbolised as [ + ]. This study also reveals that there are words that neither share any general meaning features nor diagnostic features. Every adjective is interpreted using collocation methodology. This refers to the utilisation of words in sentences contexts and reveals the meaning of the words that are being studied based corpus data from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP). 9 | 2014 thesis | Modeling students background and academic performance with missing values using classification tree Norsida Hasan Student's academic performance is a prime concern to high level educational institution since it will reflect the performance of the institution. The differences in academic performance among students are topics that has drawn interest of many academic researchers and our society. One of the biggest challenges in universities decision making and planning today is to predict the performance of their students at the early stage prior to their admission. We address the application of inferring the degree classification of students using their background data in the dataset obtained from one of the high level educational institutions in Malaysia. We present the results of a detailed statistical analysis relating to the final degree classification obtained at the end of their studies and their backgrounds. Classification tree model produce the highest accuracy in predicting student's degree classification using their background data as compared to Bayesion network and naive Bayes. The signi..... 2387 hits |
