Synthesis and characterization of biochar from peel and seed of jackfruit plant waste for the adsorption of copper metal ion from water
Mohammed Kadhem Abid
In this work, jackfruit peel and seeds are utilized to synthesized the biochar for the removal of copper metal ions from water. The synthesized jackfruit peel and seeds were carbonized at 500oC for 2 h under air atmosphere flow. The JPB and JSB were characterized by the use of different characterization techniques such as XRD, BET, FTIR, SEM and CHNS to study it’s physic-chemical properties. The synthesized biochar samples were tested for the removal of Cu metals ion from water and recorded excellent adsorption capacity of 99.84% by JPB adsorbent at optimize adsorption conditions of 45 oC adsorption temperature, 7 pH, 24 hours contact time and 100 ppm of metal solution concentration. The lowest adsorption capacity of 79.60% was recorded by JSB adsorbent under the optimized parameters of 25 oC temperature, 7 pH, 24 hours contact time and 40 ppm metal ion concentration. The results demonstrated that, jackfruit based biochar would be an excellent adsorbent for heavy metals from water. .....

Spatial river water quality assessment in Tanjung Malim, Perak (Malaysia) using multivariate statistical analysis
Mohammed Kadhem Abid
In this study, water samples from river in Tanjung Malim were analyzed for demand (BOD), dissolved oxygen (DO), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), total dissolved solid (TDS), suspended solid (SS), pH, and heavy metals including Cd, Cu, Pb, Mn, and Fe. The variations in these parameters were evaluated with the chemometric technique. The results from the principal component analysis revealed that variations in heavy metal concentrations were attributed to the automobile industry, and differences in DO, BOD, TSS, TDS, NH3-N were due to the activities along the river bank. The levels of Cd and Pb recorded in the periods under study were higher than the reference limits. These results indicate pollution of the river water especially in the month of Jan 2018, which implies that both aquatic organisms and humans could be at risk exposure to toxic metals.  ..

Potential use of biochar from jackfruit waste (Artocarpus heterophyllus lam) as heavy metal removal agent
Abid, Mohammed Kadhem
Conversion of agricultural waste products into biochar is regarded as one of several recycling and disposal options.  The study aimed to use biochar from jackfruit waste as an agent for heavy metals removal. Jackfruit waste was selected in this study due to its abundance in Malaysia.  The jackfruit waste was thermally activated by phosphoric acid at 500 oC. Analytical techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), surface area measurement (BET method), Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used to characterize the synthesized biochars. The physicochemical characteristics of the synthesized biochars were examined using different conditions to determine their usefulness for heavy metals adsorption. The surface morphology of biochars revealed the distributions of numerous cavities, cracks and small pits over the surface with pore size ranged from 3.25 – 3.78 nm. The.....
