8 | 2019 article | The effect of kodalys teaching method on preschool childrens solfege singing with playing musical glasses skills Loy, Chee Luen The objective of this study was to investigate the difference between the children’s solfege singing with playing musical glasses skills in terms of the diction, pitch accuracy and rhythm between the treatment group and the control group. The solfege notation selected and evaluated in this study encompasses (i) so mi and (ii) so mi la. The duration of this study is two weeks. Fifty children from two preschools were selected as the respondents in this study. This study adopts the quasiexperimental design with one treatment group and one control group of twenty five children, respectively. The treatment group sang and playing musical glasses, while the control group sang without playing musical glasses. The study finding shows that the Kodaly teaching method applying playing musical glasses is more effective to increase the skills in diction, pitch accuracy and rhythm if compared to the teaching method without playing musical glasses. 9 | 2021 article | Enhancing puppets roles for the disaster community Loy, Chee Luen In the course of coping among the survivors during disasters, it is important for the community to seek comfort, trying to forget the pains, worries and problems of the disasters. Thus, being finding the strategies to cope are very important. Reports have shown puppets play significant roles in enabling those troubling experiences worked through more compassionately. The study investigated the roles of puppets in assisting the survivors to cope better in times of disasters. The study employed a qualitative paradigm where a total of six respondents were interviewed. The findings show through puppets’ characters being played enabled disturbed thoughts and feeling to be clarified and the comfort served as a coping strategy. Besides that, the story lines create a sense of rooted-ness in time of disasters and help them to strengthen themselves to face the uncertainties. 10 | 2021 article | The importance of puppet plays to children in disaster preparedness programmes Loy, Chee Luen In disaster preparedness programmes, puppet plays are an important therapeutic medium for children. Accordingly, this qualitative study was aimed to investigate the importance of puppet plays for children who were enrolled in the said programme. In-depth interviews were conducted on six respondents, two of whom were males included a school head, and a worker from the rehabilitation centre respectively. Meanwhile, the four remaining females included a teacher, two caretakers, and a disaster survivor among the disaster community. Following thematic analysis, it was found that the inclusion of puppet plays in a disaster preparedness programme not only educated nursery, kindergarten, and primary school children on disaster preparedness; they helped reduce the emotional impact caused by such untoward incidents as well. Hence, puppet plays can be useful in psychotherapy for children in such programmes.
