Object oriented vs structured analysis and design in system development courses
Aslina Saad
Objectives: The main aim of this study was to investigate the factors that influence students’, academicians’, clients’, as well as developer’s preferences in choosing their preferred approach in system development, namely structured analysis design (SAD) or object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD). Methods: The research design was based on a survey methodology and a case study. For the survey, questionnaires were administered to 30 students and 38 academicians, who were randomly selected from several Malaysian universities. For the case study, the requirements of the information system were modeled and presented to several clients to elicit their feedback. The survey data were analyzed using SPSS Findings: The result shows that students preferred the use of OOAD approach, which clearly outnumbered those who preferred the SAD approach, which stood at 33%. Interestingly, the majority (53%) of academicians preferred the use of a mixture of both approaches. Likewise, the clients.....

Current trends in the integration of case-based reasoning and semantic Web
Aslina Saad
Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) and semantic web are intelligent methods or techniques that have been used in number of critical fields. Both methods have unique strengths and immense potential in problem solving in a wide range of domains. The main aim of this paper is to highlight an overview of the current efforts by researchers to integrate the capabilities of both techniques of CBR and semantic web. Through an analysis on the current literature involving 21 related articles, a taxonomy was developed indicating there were three stands of research focus. First, 38% (n = 8) of the articles involved studies of new methods that combined both techniques. Second, 33.3% (n = 7) of the articles dealt with the development of working frameworks or new approaches. Third, 28.6% (n = 6) of the articles focused on efforts to develop systems that integrated both techniques. In particular, the analysis showed that the medical field was the dominant field in which the integrated technique was widely use.....

The trend of Body Mass Index (BMI) changes among malaysian children and the prediction at 48 months old
Aslina Saad
Overweight and underweight are common issues among children in Malaysia and thus, Malaysian government has launched several campaigns to combat these problems. Previous research show that BMI at certain age could be predicted earlier so that early intervention can be initiate. Most of the study are very specific to some locality and certain ethnic, make it hard to generalize to the whole Malaysian. This research aims to investigate significant positive predictors of changes in Body Mass Index (BMI) of young children aged from 12 months to 48 months and to develop a prediction model for their BMI status (normal, overweight, obese, risk of overweight, underweight, and severe underweight). Data consisting of 558 records with 16 attributes involving 18,226 children, who had registered at the National Child Data Centre (NCDC) were analyzed and predicted using the decision tree algorithms of Rapid miner. The BMI of 48 months-old children can be reliably predicted by their BMI statuses at the.....
