| 2021 article | Low nickel, ceria zirconia-based micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cell: A study of composition and oxidation using hydrogen and methane fuel Suriani binti Abu Bakar The study examines the effect of using low nickel (Ni) with high ceria (CeO2) anode content towards the oxidation of H2 and CH4 fuel by evaluating the activation energy of the ohmic process and charge transfer process. Using a micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cell (MT-SOFC), the anodes are made up of 50% YSZ with varying NiO:CeO2 percentages from 0% NiO, 50% CeO2 to 50% NiO, 0% CeO2. The performance is measured based on maximum power density (MPD), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and activation energy, Ea of the ohmic (Rohm) and charge transfer (Rct) processes. We found that by lowering the Ni content to lower than 50% NiO, anode conductivity will drop by 7-fold. An anode containing 37.5% NiO, 12.5% CeO2 yield MPD of 41.1 and 2.9 mW cm−2 when tested on H2 and CH4 fuels thus have the lowest Ni content without an abrupt negative effect on the MPD and EIS. The significant effect of conductivity drops on MPD and EIS are observed to occur at 25% NiO, 25% CeO2 and lowe..... 465 hits |
| 2021 article | Functional properties of kenaf bast fibre anhydride modification enhancement with bionanocarbon in polymer nanobiocomposites Suriani Abu Bakar The miscibility between hydrophilic biofibre and hydrophobic matrix has been a challenge in developing polymer biocomposite. This study investigated the anhydride modification effect of propionic and succinic anhydrides on Kenaf fibre’s functional properties in vinyl ester bionanocomposites. Bionanocarbon from oil palm shell agricultural wastes enhanced nanofiller properties in the fibre-matrix interface via the resin transfer moulding technique. The succinylated fibre with the addition of the nanofiller in vinyl ester provided great improvement of the tensile, flexural, and impact strengths of 92.47 ± 1.19 MPa, 108.34 ± 1.40 MPa, and 8.94 ± 0.12 kJ m−2, respectively than the propionylated fibre. The physical, morphological, chemical structural, and thermal properties of bionanocomposites containing 3% bionanocarbon loading showed better enhancement properties. This enhancement was associated with the effect of the anhydride modification and the nanofiller’s homogeneity in bio..... 637 hits |
| 2021 article | Optimization of a high-performance poly(Diallyl dimethylammonium chloride)-alumina-perfluorooctanoate intercalated ultrafiltration membrane for treating emulsified oily wastewater via response surface methodology approach Suriani Abu Bakar This research aimed to investigate the ultrafiltration of water from emulsified oily wastewater through the application of surface-functionalized ceramic membrane to enhance its water permeability based on optimized parameters using a cross-flow filtration system. The interactive effects of feed concentration (10–1000 ppm), pH (4–10), and pressure (0–3 bar) on the water flux and oil rejection were investigated. Central composite design (CCD) from response surface methodology (RSM) was employed for statistical analysis, modeling, and optimization of operating conditions. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) results showed that the oil rejection and water flux models were significant with p-values of 0.0001 and 0.0075, respectively. In addition, good correlation coefficients of 0.997 and 0.863 were obtained for the oil rejection and water flux models, respectively. The optimum conditions for pressure, pH, and feed concentration were found to be 1.5 bar, pH 8.97, and 10 ppm, respectivel..... 418 hits |
| 2021 article | Fabrication of high performance pvdf hollow fiber membrane using less toxic solvent at different additive loading and air gap Suriani Abu Bakar Existing toxic solvents in the manufacturing of polymeric membranes have been raising concerns due to the risks of exposure to health and the environment. Furthermore, the lower tensile strength of the membrane renders these membranes unable to endure greater pressure during water treatment. To sustain a healthier ecosystem, fabrication of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane using a less toxic solvent, triethyl phosphate (TEP), with a lower molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) (0–3 wt.%) additive were experimentally demonstrated via a phase inversion-based spinning technique at various air gap (10, 20 and 30 cm). Membrane with 2 wt.% of PEG 400 exhibited the desired ultrafiltration asymmetric morphology, while 3 wt.% PEG 400 resulting microfiltration. The surface roughness, porosity, and water flux performance increased as the loading of PEG 400 increased. The mechanical properties and contact angle of the fabricated membrane were influenced by the air gap ..... 384 hits |
| 2021 article | Physical properties of novel α-fe2o3/nio heterostructures through immersion/ sol–gel spin coating method: Different deposition numbers of nio layer Suriani Abu Bakar The novel hematite (α-Fe2O3)/nickel oxide (NiO) heterostructures were grown on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass substrates at various deposited NiO of 3, 5, and 7 layers. The heterostructures were successfully synthesized using the immersion and sol–gel spin coating methods for α-Fe2O3 and NiO films, respectively. The field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that each sample of α-Fe2O3/NiO heterostructures has a unique surface morphology when deposited with different NiO layers. The X-ray diffraction pattern shows that the number of NiO layers affected the diffraction peaks. The NiO diffraction peak intensity at (111) plane increased when the deposition number of NiO layer was increased. The crystallite sizes of NiO were 35.4, 33.6, and 38.0 nm for 3-, 5-, and 7-layer NiO, respectively. The interplanar spacing, lattice parameter, and unit cell volume indicate NiO with 3-layer as the highest, while 5-and 7-layer had the same values. Meanwhile, the stra..... 809 hits |
| 2021 article | Carbon nanotubes from waste cooking palm oil as adsorbent materials for the adsorption of heavy metal ions Suriani Abu Bakar In this work, waste cooking palm oil (WCPO)-based carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with encapsulated iron (Fe) nanoparticles have been successfully produced via modified thermal chemical vapor deposition method. Based on several characterizations, the dense WCPO-based CNT was produced with high purity of 89% and high crystallinity proven by low ID/IG ratio (0.43). Moreover, the ferromagnetic response of CNTs showed that the average coercivity and magnetization saturation were found to be 551.5 Oe and 13.4 emu/g, respectively. These produced WCPO-based CNTs were further used as heavy metal ions adsorbent for wastewater treatment application. Some optimizations, such as the effect of different adsorbent dosage, varied initial pH solution, and various heavy metal ions, were investigated. The adsorption studies showed that the optimum adsorbent dosage was 1.8 g/L when it was applied to 100 mg/L Cu (II) solution at neutral pH (pH 7). Further measurement then showed that high Cu (II) ion removal perc..... 350 hits |
