1 | 2013 thesis | Malay Muslim academic women in dual-career families: negotiating religious and cultural identities and practices Zuraini Jamil Osman This study focuses on Malay Muslim academic women in dual-career families in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, Malaysia. I conducted semi-structured, in-depth face-to-face interviews with ten married academic women, five single female academics and three single male academics, while ten husbands of the married women were interviewed via email. The context in which modern Malay Muslim women operate is a complex one. On the one hand, Islam and the Malayadat (customary law), constructed as central to the ethnic identity of Malay Muslims, prescribe specific gendered expectations for women and men in both the private and public spheres. On the other hand, the state and global competition demand that women participate in the economy as well as in broader societal contexts. I explored how my respondents strategised in both employment and family life within the boundaries of their identity as Malay Muslim women. My study emphasised central aspects of Malaysian modernisation in relation to women, name..... 2601 hits |

3 | 2021 article | Decision making power in domestic sphere: participation of professional Indian women in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Zuraini binti Jamil @ Osman In most of the societies, the decision making power of women is limited due to gender perspectives and cultural practices. Similarly in Indian society, patriarchy ideology is very common in which men are the main breadwinners and decision-makers of the family but this belief is gradually changing. Thus, this study aims to explore the participation of professional Indian women in the decision making power in the family on the aspect of household matters. Fifteen Indian women, who work in different professional sectors and live in Kuala Lumpur and the Selangor area, were selected for this study. A qualitative approach using one to one in-depth interview method was used to gather the primary data. The findings show that majority of the husbands are sharing the household chores equally with their wife but there are still some men who do not provide any assistance in doing house works. Moreover, women have freedom to decide on basic things but there are differences in practice for men and w..... 592 hits |
4 | 2019 article | Examining family and school factors as predictors of delinquency: a study of juvenile offenders, at risk students, and low risk students in Malaysia Tan, Bee Piang This study aims to examine family and school factors as predictors of delinquency among adolescents in Malaysia. A total of 101 juvenile offenders, 86 at‐risk students, and 92 low‐risk students were involved in this study. Multinomial logistic regression was used to predict the likelihood of an adolescent being in a group of juvenile of‐ fenders or of being an at‐risk or low‐risk student, based on four predictor variables: family structure, family relationships, school relationships, and commitment to learn‐ ing. The results show that family relations, school relations, and commitment to learning have different predictive effects on the likelihood of different levels of de‐ linquent behavior. However, family structure is not found to be a significant predictor in the logistic regression in this study. The findings of the study suggest that keeping young people in school can serve as a strong protective factor that serves to prevent at‐risk students from moving along the..... 428 hits |

The quest of each ethnic group to maintain its culture, religion and language may lead to conflict with the central government’s efforts at nation-building and integration. Given that Malaysia is an ethnically pluralist society, one of the major on-going tasks of the government has been to develop a nation which is harmonious, integrated and ‘democratic’ as a Malaysian nation. The nature of the current Malaysian national vision has been characterized as ‘ethnically differentiated citizenship’ that promotes Malay ness as a national identity whilst at the same time peripherally recognizing others’ cultural identity.
