Abstract : Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris
This dissertation is a report on a research project to develop teaching materials using folktales to teach Malay language as well as positive values to Muslim Thai school children in the provinces of South Thailand. The folktales were collected using three methods, i.e. (a) through interviews with Muslim Thais in South Thailand, (b) through published and unpublished materials, and (c) through data bases in the internet. A collection of such folktales were collected from the provinces of South Thailand. 25 of them were selected after an analisis was done to ensure that they contain positive values. The folktales were adapted for use in the classroom to teach Malay. Each of them is made up of a storey for reading, followed by a series of excercises for comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, idioms, and play acting. These activities were specifically desighed to strengthen the learning of Malay. The dissertation is organized in five chapters. Chapter I introduces Thailand as a country, and an account of Malay in the education is also provided. Chapter II gave an account of the methodology used. Chapter III provided a full list of the 25 folktales selected. Chapter IV gave a summary account of the values of those folktales in teaching Malay. Chapter V concluded the dissertation.
