Abstract : Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris
This article discusses the issues of the function of scenography in building aspects of visual communication through the SARAH Theatre. The function of scenography on stage such as set design, lighting and costumes is an important element in theatre. The role of scenography can help the actor with full appreciation. Scenographer design placed on the stage helps the actors to identify their roles and responsibilities through understanding the needs of performing on stage and being able to visualize to give understanding to the audience. Visual communication on a stage is divided into three sets, costumes, make-up, and lighting. Visual elements must be united, connected and complete to give effectiveness in a stage. The method used in this study is an analysis of the SARAH Theater which was staged at the Center for Art Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia in October 2019. Detailed research was conducted to analyze the artistic values in scenography design through the SARAH Theater. The focus of the study is related to the analysis of the function of scenography in playing a role in giving the audience an interpretation of understanding the symbolism displayed in each scene of the staging. This study uses a qualitative method by analyzing the visual role of scenography as a medium of communication for the stage. The two approaches used for data collection are semi-structured interviews and observation of video recordings of performances obtained from the theatre director. Researchers have identified that the aesthetic values presented have had a dramatic effect on the performance. Visual communication on stage can lead the audience to recognize the social and cultural meaning of a work and also to understand the meaning of its images. 2023, Penerbit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
