| Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis usaha-usaha yang dilakukan oleh negara anggota The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) dalam menjalinkan hubungan dengan Vietnam sejak penubuhannya 1967 sehingga tahun 1995. ASEAN yang ditubuhkan pada 8 Ogos 1967, diasaskan oleh Indonesia, Malaysia, Filipina, Singapura dan Thailand. Ia ditubuhkan ketika Asia Tenggara sedang berhadapan dengan konflik di antara Vietnam Utara, yang disokong oleh negara prokomunis dengan Vietnam Selatan, yang disokong negara antikomunis. Konflik tersebut turut memberi kesan kepada hubungan Vietnam Utara dengan ASEAN. Walaupun ASEAN sebagai satu organisasi yang berkecuali, tetapi kebanyakan negara anggotanya adalah antikomunis. Ini telah memberi kesan kepada hubungannya dengan Vietnam Utara. Selepas tahun 1975, golongan berfahaman komunis telah menguasai pemerintahan Vietnam. Perkembangan selepas perang memperlihatkan kemunculan krisis-krisis baru yang melibatkan Cambodia, Laos dan konflik persempadanan antara Vietnam dengan China. Bagi menyelesaikan krisis-krisis tersebut, satu inisiatif dilaksanakan untuk menyatukan ketiga-tiga negara Indochina ke dalam ASEAN. Usaha tersebut terpaksa menghadapi berbagai halangan berikutan perbezaan ideologi. Setelah tamatnya persaingan ideologi dengan berakhirnya Perang Dingin pada 1990, usaha tersebut menjadi semakin positif sehinggalah Vietnam menyertai ASEAN pada 1995.
