Abstract : Perpustakaan Tuanku Bainun
This objective of the study was to investigate the pedagogical aspects of teaching the English language in private universities in Bangladesh. The study examined the pedagogical practices of lecturers, the materials and assessment system used. A mixed-methods research design which incorporated survey, classroom observation and interview was employed to collect data. The instruments used were the questionnaire, classroom observation checklist and interview protocol. The participants who were involved in the survey were seventy English language lecturers. Nine of the lecturers were observed during classroom teaching and were also interviewed. Data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics and were displayed in the form of tables and charts. The findings showed limited use of pedagogical aspects which were aligned with classroom assessment practice. Instead, traditional assessment methods were used by the English Language lecturers in Bangladesh. Most of the lecturers used the Grammar-Translation method of teaching which emphasised grammatical accuracy. Teaching was teacher dominated and was more oriented towards examinations. The aim was to enable students to pass the examinations, rather than to be able to communicate in English. Very little practice was encouraged to conduct real communication in the classroom. Some form of communication was discernible to indicate the use of the Communicative Language Teaching approach. However, the communication was based on dialogues obtained in textbooks. As a conclusion the pedagogical practices of the lecturers seemed to be wrought with shortcomings. Apart from being traditionally inclined, teaching was hampered by the lack of resources plus knowledge and skills of teaching the English language. This study has shown some pedagogical aspects of teaching the English language in a few institutions of higher learning. It paves the way for similar research to be conducted to ascertain more about the teaching of English in universities in order to improve the situation globally.
