Abstract

This study aims to identify the characteristics of Chinese ancient inscriptions and their application in contemporary Chinese calligraphy. Drawing from established theories in Chinese calligraphy and relevant literature, including the Theory of Chinese Calligraphy adapted from Chen (2022), the study delves into the intricate details of Chinese ancient inscriptions. Data collection methods included a comprehensive review of literature and visual analysis, guided by the principle of "Qi," to elucidate the underlying characteristics embedded in ancient inscriptions. Additionally, a comparison of contemporary calligraphy artists' artworks was undertaken using Feldman's Model of Art Criticism. The findings reveal the profound interplay between angular and circular brushwork, showcasing the technical skill and artistic expression inherent in Chinese calligraphy. Moreover, the study demonstrates how these characteristics are translated into contemporary Chinese calligraphy through the works of contemporary calligraphy artists such as Zeng Xiang, Wang Dongling, Lu Zizhen, Xu Bing, Wei Ligang, Gu Gan, and Luo Qi. Specifically, it was found that Zeng Xiang's works prominently reflect the beauty of straight lines and angles, while Wang Dongling's calligraphy emphasizes dynamic, fluid brushstrokes. Lu Zizhen's pieces integrate emotional depth with traditional aesthetics, and Xu Bing's works showcase the use of gentle, round brushstrokes to convey harmony. Wei Ligang's calligraphy combines rapid writing styles with abstract forms, and Gu Gan's art merges traditional calligraphy with Western abstract influences. Lastly, Luo Qi's works highlight a seamless blend of text and image, embodying both modernist and traditional elements. These findings highlight the enduring relevance and adaptability of this ancient art form. The implications of this study extend to the broader fields of art, culture, and history, offering insights into the cultural heritage and artistic traditions of China. This study contributes to a greater understanding of Chinese calligraphy and its significance in global art discourse.
