Abstract

This research project investigated the aesthetic of sense of place throughcultural identity in modern urban space of Yangzhou. This study aims to identify the cultural elements that form the basic design of urban space that are capable of creatingaunique memory value and sense of belonging. Key elements of the researchproject include the designs and features of landmarks buildings, bridges and interior spacewhich has a significant environmental impact in shaping spatial identity. Thekeyartists involved in this research are Wu Guanzhong_Julie Mehretu_Seth Armstrong, Anne Desmet, Gu Zhijun, Wen Zhongyan_Carmen Smith, Peter Doig and AndrewSoria. The reference artworks explore three aspects of the sense of place in termsofarchitecture and environment, place and cultural identity, and memory and belonging. The theory of Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience was usedtocontextualize the research project. The research project used the studio practiceresearch method through critical self-reflection, studio experimentationandcontextual review approaches. The research project revealed that cultural elementsina modern urban space are very important in creating a sense of existenceandbelonging through the illusion of collective memory that forms the identityanduniqueness of a place. The research project_s contribution to the field of Fine Art isthrough the establishment of a strong relationship between cultural identityandtheurban spatial environment, showing that the aesthetic characteristics of a cityarenot only determined by its physical form but also by the cultural narratives and collectivememories embedded within it. Therefore, offer valuable insights for urban planners, artists, and cultural policymakers in promoting urban renewal and sustainabledevelopment_particularly by integrating cultural preservation with innovative designstrategies that respect both heritage and contemporary needs
