Abstract : |
Globalization, rapid economic growth and industrialisastion have an immediate impact on educators and education in Malaysia. As a leading technological device, computers have paved their ways to Malaysian classrooms as an instructional tool or a means to self-access knowledge for both teachers and students. This implies that language classes in Malaysia has progressed not only beyond chalk and talk, but to much more sophisticated teaching tools ranging form over head projectors, videos and slides. As Malaysia is gearing towards producing competent teachers to fulfil the increasing demand of high quality educationists who are capable of utilising the state-of-art materials to deliver lessons effectively, the debates on economic and cultural issues on adopting Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) still prevail among doubtful teachers. This paper justifies the needs to welcome CALL into the classroom by presenting some fundamental theories and concepts on CALL and reviewing studies on teachers’ and students’ perception on CALL. It is hoped this would induce language teachers to a new paradigm shift in English language teaching methodology. |
