This study focuses on the features of the speech act of compliment responses as produced by Malay ESL speakers and the cultural values that influence them. Using Herbert's (1986) taxonomy of compliment responses, the data was collected using a Written Discourse Completion Test (WDCT) which gave five situations in various settings with interlocutors of both equal and unequal status. It is revealed that Malay ESL speakers has the tendency to give appreciation token, provide comment history, scale down and shift the credit to someone else when accepting compliments. It reflects the Malay values of humility and modesty when accepting compliments. Discussions regarding differences between Australian native speakers, which povided the baseline data, and the Malay ESL speakers are also covered in this study along with cross-linguistic similarities and differences between the present study and previous studies on compliment responses. |
