Gelandangan bukanlah suatu fenomena yang baru di negara ini, namun sejak kebelakangan ini ia telah menjadi satu masalah sosial yang semakin berleluasa dan memerlukan pemerhatian serius daripada semua pihak. Masalah gelandangan ini juga telah menarik perhatian umum dan para sarjana kerana implikasinya yang begitu mendalam terhadap isu kemanusiaan khususnya peminggiran sosial dan isu kelestarian bandar serta komuniti setempat. Objektif utama kajian ini adalah untuk membongkar demografi golongan gelandangan dan meneroka punca-punca yang menyumbang kepada kewujudan mereka khususnya di George Town, Pulau Pinang. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah campuran iaitu kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Pengumpulan data telah dijalankan melalui kaedah soal selidik ke atas 30 orang responden gelandangan, manakala temu bual secara mendalam telah dijalankan ke atas 15 orang informan gelandangan yang dipilih daripada 30 orang responden tersebut. Data daripada soal selidik telah dianalisis dengan menggunakan perisian Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), manakala data daripada temu bual mendalam telah dianalisis secara analisis kandungan. Hasil kajian ini mendapati bahawa faktor tiada tempat tinggal, tiada pekerjaan, konflik keluarga, pengaruh dadah, diusir dari rumah dan tiada ahli keluarga menjadi penyumbang utama kepada populasi gelandangan di George Town. Kajian ini berpotensi untuk menyumbang kepada pengetahuan mengenai isu peminggiran sosial yang berlaku terhadap golongan gelandangan di Malaysia khususnya Pulau Pinang dan implikasinya terhadap kelestarian hidup komuniti bandar. |
