Abstract : |
Division seems to be the algorithm that the pupils struggle the most to master it. Therefore, “Big 7” method is introduced to help them to master it. This study is conducted to ascertain the perceptions and the motivation of year Three pupils of SJKs in Baram district towards the use of “Big 7” method in the learning of division of whole numbers. The study also examines the relationship between the pupils’ perceptions towards the use of “Big 7” method and the pupils’ motivation in the learning of division of whole numbers. The data for this study is collected using a set of questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results show that the pupils have a positive perception (Mean=3.72) towards “Big 7” method. Motivation of the pupils is identified to be in the category of moderate with an average mean of 3.55. Pearson Correlation results show that there is a significant relationship between the pupils’ perceptions towards the use of “Big 7” method and the mean score of pupils’ motivation in the learning of division of whole numbers. However, the relationship between intrinsic motivation and perceptions (r = 0.640) is stronger than the relationship between extrinsic motivation and perceptions (r =0.590). The implication of this study is the teachers are able to identify pupils’ perceptions and motivation towards new learning method and thus plan a more effective lesson. Pupils will realize that solving division problem is notonly restricted to the conventional method.© 2014 IASE Publisher. All rights reserved. |
