Abstract : Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris
This study was conducted with the aim of building a suitable instrument to collect data about the learning styles of students who are taking physics at the secondary school level. The absence of an instrument which is able to evaluate students’ learning styles in learning physics in Malaysia makes it all the more imperative for one to be constructed. This instrument is to be used specifically by students and teachers to identify the prominent learning style for physics. This study was conducted in three secondary schools in Kuantan, Pahang. A total of 216 students comprising boys and girls of various ethnic groups were chosen as the sample for this study. The data collected were analyzed using the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) version 13.0 software. A total of 43 items were constructed based on the Multiple Intelligences Theory. For the purpose of face validity and content validity, a total of nine experts in physics education were consulted. Responses from the nine experts show that they agree that the instrument has face and content validity. In addition, constuct validity was determined using factor analysis procedure. The factor analysis conducted revealed five new factors. Hence, the final version of the instrument containing 24 items and covering 5 dimensions which has construct validity, came into being. The instrument’s reliability as a whole is found to be high with a reading of 0.873 using the Cronbach Alpha procedure on the internal consistency measurement. Therefore, this study contribute to the development of a new instrument for identifying students’ physics learning styles.
