The objectives of the study were to assess the extent of bully-victim incidents in selected primary schools in Perak: compare the extent of bully-victim problem according to gender, class and school type; assess the dimensions of self-concept among the preadolescents under study; and explain bully-victim problems in terms of self-concept and selected independent variables. In addition, this study also sought to solicit information from head teachers. discipline teachers and chairmen of parent-teacher associations as to their understanding on the concept of bullying, the extent of bullying in their respective schools, characteristics of bullies and victims, and how each school addressed this problem. A total of 2528 primary school children from 29 National and National Type primary schools completed the instrument on bully-victim problems, where bullying occurred, their overall academic-efficacy. and four dimensions of self-concept. In addition, 24 children were interviewed after the first phase of the study. Sixty-four adult participants from 21 schools responded the six open-ended questions on bullying. The results showed more children were involved in indirect or psychological bullying, A high percentage of these children also reported being bully-victims of psychological and physical bullying. More boys were involved in both forms of bullying as well as being victims of bullying. In addition, there were more incidents of both forms of bullying among standard six children. The classroom seemed to witness the most number of bullying behaviours. which happened more frequently before teachers come into class. Majority of these bullies were boys and majority of them were older than their victims. Gender was the most contributing factor for direct bullying. while school type was the most significant variable for indirect bullying. The effects of bullying on victims were negative in nature. The definition of bullying by the adult respondents was similar to that in the literature. However, the incidence of bullying as reported by this group of respondents was very much lower than that reported by the children.
