Abstract : Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris
Kajian ini bertujuan mengkaji tentang kesan perubahan politi ke atas masyarakat Orang Laut  Johor-Riau sehingga akhir abad ke-20. Politi dalam kajian ini adalah suatu konsep yang berkait  rapat dengan hubungan kuasa dan tadbir urus dalam konteks sistem politik tempatan.  Orang  Laut   pernah  memainkan  peranan  penting  dalam  era  pembentukan politi   awal   kerajaan   Melayu    tradisional.   Orang   Laut   ialah   nadi   kekuatan   dan kegemilangan empayar Srivijaya sehingga  kepada kerajaan Melayu Melaka dan Johor- Riau. Pendekatan kualitatif dengan reka bentuk analisis  dokumen dan manuskrip telah digunakan untuk menjawab empat soalan kajian dengan memperoleh sumber  utama seperti dokumen dan manuskrip yang terdapat di Arkib Negara Malaysia, The National Archives   di  Kew  Garden  dan  British  Library,  London.    Selain  itu,  dokumen  dan manuskrip juga  didapati di Institute of South East Asia Studies,  perpustakaan National University of Singapore  dan Perpustakaan Soeman HS di Pekanbaru, Riau. Data kajian turut diperoleh daripada sumber kedua  yang terdapat di perpustakaan institusi pengajian tinggi di Malaysia, Singapura dan Indonesia.  Analisis data dalam kajian ini berdasarkan teori  hermeneutik  dalam  tafsiran  sejarah.  Dapatan   kajian  menunjukkan  bahawa perubahan politi yang berlaku telah meninggalkan kesan kepada peranan  Orang Laut Johor-Riau. Perpecahan yang berlaku dalam politi kerajaan Melayu pada akhir abad ke- 17  telah menjejaskan hubungan timbal balik yang terjalin antara Orang Laut dengan politi kerajaan  Melayu. Dapatan kajian juga menunjukkan bahawa peranan Orang Laut tidak  lagi  relevan  dalam   konteks  pertembungan  peradaban  yang  berlaku  semasa kemunculan  politi  era  kolonial  pada   sekitar  abad  ke-18  dan  pembentukan  politi  era merdeka   sehingga   akhir   abad   ke-20.    Kesimpulan   kajian   menunjukkan   bahawa perkembangan  peradaban  yang  berlaku  telah   meminggirkan  Orang  Laut  Johor-Riau dan  diikuti  pula  oleh  kegagalan  Orang  Laut  Johor-Riau   melibatkan  diri  dalam perkembangan politik, ekonomi dan sosial dalam lingkungan wilayah dan  sempadan politi yang mereka diami. Implikasi kajian menunjukkan bahawa perubahan politi yang epada masyarakat yang tidak bergerak seiring dengan perkembangan peradaban yang dibawa bersama perubahan tersebut.
