Penyelidikan ini mengkaji unsur simbolisme dalam teks pengap gawai pangkung tiang masyarakat Iban di daerah Julau. Reka bentuk kualitatif menggunakan kaedah kajian kepustakaan dengan kajian lapangan.
Teori semiotik digunakan dalam kajian ini. Data diperolehi melalui kaedah pemerhatian dan temu bual. Analisis data menggunakan Model Bogdan dan Biklen (2007). Data dianalisis secara serentak bertujuan untuk menjelaskan maklumat secara terperinci. Sebanyak enam jenis teks dianalisis berkaitan unsur simbolisme. Unsur simbolisme dianalisis dalam teks pengap gawai pangkung tiang diperoleh daripada informan sumber dari kajian kepustakaan.
Simbol dalam pengap berkait rapat dengan persekitaran dan kehidupan harian masyarakat Iban. Mereka menganggap semua benda hidup dan benda bukan hidup mempunyai semengat atau roh dengan memberi sifat manusia kepada benda tersebut melalui simbol. Simbol muncul melalui pelbagai deria seperti pendengaran dan penglihatan. Terdapat enam kategori simbol dalam pengap gawai pangkung tiang iaitu simbol habitat, simbol alam kosmos, simbol deiti/dewa, simbol manusia, simbol tempat dan simbol benda bukan hidup.
Implikasinya, penyelidikan ini dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan guru Bahasa Iban di Sarawak untuk mengajar puisi pengap melalu komponen estetik dalam Bahasa Iban
