Abstract : Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris
Kajian  ini  bertujuan  mengenal  pasti  pemupukan  budaya  membaca  dalam  kalanganmurid  di  sebuah  sekolah  rendah.  Secara  khusus  objektif  kajian  ini  adalah  untuk meneroka penerapan budaya membaca dalam perspektif sekolah rendah, melihat ciri- ciri budaya membaca yang diamalkan oleh murid, mengenal pasti penglibatan sekolah dalam  memupuk  budaya  membaca,  mengenal pasti  faktor-faktor  yang  menghalang pemupukan budaya membaca dan keperluan dalam membudayakan budaya membaca. Pendekatan   kualitatif   telah   dipilih   dengan   menggunakan   kajian   kes   sebagai metodologi kajian. Tiga teknik triangulasi kutipan data digunakan iaitu pemerhatian, temu  bual  dan  analisis  dokumen.    Informan  yang  ditemu  bual  secara  mendalam hingga ketahap ketepuan data adalah seramai 15 orang murid dan empat orang guru. Data dianalisis dengan melakukan proses transkripsi dan pengekodan dalam melihat kecenderungan  terhadap  budaya  membaca.  Teori  budaya  yang  diperkenalkan  oleh Piere  Bourdieu  digunakan  dalam  kajian  ini.  Dapatan  kajian  menunjukkan  budaya membaca  bukan  habitus  dalam  kalangan  murid.    Membaca  bukanlah  satu  perkara yang  dilakukakan secara  rela  dan keinginan untuk  membaca  tidak  seperti keinginan untuk  berseronok.     Dalam  persekitaran  sekolah,   murid   lebih  cenderung  kepada kebiasaan  berseronok  bersama  kawan-kawan.  Di sekolah  ini  murid  hanya  membaca untuk   tujuan  peperiksaan,   kurang   program   budaya   membaca   dan   bahan-bahan sokongan  tidak  mencukupi.  Dalam  konteks  kajian,  jika  seseorang  dilihat  membaca buku,   sudah  dianggap   sebagai budaya   membaca.     Kajian   merumuskan   budaya membaca  dalam kalangan  murid  ditafsirkan sebagai seseorang  yang  membaca  buku untuk  tujuan  pembelajaran,  masa  lapang,  keseronokan  dan  sebagainya  tetapi  bukan sebagai tabiat.  Implikasi adalah habitus membaca murid perlukan perubahan melalui pelbagai  pendekatan  termasuk  program  sepanjang  tahun,  penyediaan  koleksi  dan kemudahan capaian maklumat yang lebih baik (modal budaya) dalam lapangan (field)  sekolah.
