Abstract : Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris
Kajian ini adalah bertujuan untuk meneroka puisi pengap gawai pangkung tiang dalam masyarakat Iban untuk menganalisis unsur-unsur simbolisme dan fungsinya serta menghuraikan ritual yang dijalankan. Kaedah kajian yang telah digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif yang menggabungkan kajian kepustakaan dengan kajian lapangan. Data diperoleh melalui pemerhatian dan temu bual serta dianalisis menggunakan Model Bogdan dan Biklen (2007) dan Model Tesch (1990) untuk menjelaskan unsur-unsur simbolisme serta fungsi puisi pengap tersebut. Sampel kajian diperolehi daripada penghulu, tuai rumah, tuai burung dan lemambang. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa fungsi pengap adalah untuk memohon keberkatan, perlindungan, kesihatan dan rezeki daripada deiti atau dewa. Kesimpulannya, unsur-unsur simbolisme dalam puisi pengap seperti simbol habitat, alam kosmos, deiti, manusia, tempat dan benda bukan hidup menunjukkan makna khusus dalam konteks fungsi ritual yang dijalankan oleh masyarakat Iban tradisional. Implikasinya ialah puisi pengap ini dijalankan secara tertib berlandaskan peringkat-peringkat tertentu dalam komuniti etnik Iban sekaligus menjelaskan mengapa ia masih relevan kepada guru yang mengajar komponen estetik dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa lban.
