Penderaan emosi kepada kawalan paksaan dan pencerobohan ekspresif seperti penghinaan dan panggilan nama di antara dua pihak. Isu penderaan emosi dalam hubungan romantik dikaji kerana kajian sedia ada masih terhad dan kurangnya bukti berlakunya penderaan emosi dalam kalangan pelajar terutamanya dalam konteks tempatan. Kajian ini telah dijalankan untuk mengkaji pengaruh faktor psikososial iaitu tret personaliti lima faktor, tahap kesunyian dan gaya keibubapaan terhadap penderaan emosi dalam kalangan pelajar universiti di Malaysia yang pernah menjalinkan hubungan romantik untuk sekurang-kurangnya tempoh tiga bulan. Data kajian ini dikumpulkan melalui kaedah kuantitatif iaitu dengan menggunakan metod tinjauan. Sebanyak empat instrumen iaitu Emotional Abuse Quenstionnaire, Big Five Inventory (BFI-10), Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale dan Scale of Parenting Style telah diterjemahkan ke dalam Bahasa Melayu dan telah digunakan dalam kajian ini. Seramai 273 orang pelajar universiti yang pernah menjalinkan hubungan romantik telah mengambil bahagian dalam kajian ini. Analisis linear berganda telah dilakukan bagi mengenal pasti pengaruh faktor psikososial terhadap penderaan emosi. Keputusan kajian menunjukkan bahawa prevalens pelajar universiti di Malaysia mengalami penderaan emosi adalah pada tahap rendah. Hasil kajian mendapati dua faktor psikososial iaitu tret personaliti jenis kehematan dan gaya keibubapaan jenis responsif memberikan pengaruh signifikan terhadap penderaan emosi. Hasil kajian signifikan dalam memahami faktor psikososial yang menjadi asas kepada penderaan emosi dan pemahaman ini penting sebagai langkah proaktif dalam mengelakkan diri dalam menjadi mangsa penderaan emosi.
