Penumpuan gelandangan bekas banduan di bandar-bandar besar seperti Kuala Lumpur telah menarik minat dan menjadi keingintahuan pengkaji untuk meneroka kehidupan mereka dari perspektif ekologi. Dengan menggunakan Teori Ekologi Manusia, kehidupan jalanan golongan bekas banduan diteroka. Sebuah kajian yang menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif telah dilakukan ke atas 15 orang gelandangan bekas banduan yang berada di sekitar Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur. Maklumat kajian diperoleh dengan menggunakan teknik temu bual mendalam dan data kajian dianalisis dengan menggunakan perisian Altas.Ti. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa terdapat empat tema ditemui yang berkait dengan faktor persekitaran iaitu tiada sistem sokongan, tiada peluang untuk mengubah nasib, tiada harapan dan motivasi dan perjalanan hidup yang kompleks. Keempat-empat tema tersebut menjelaskan bahawa wujudnya hubungan yang tidak harmoni di antara responden kajian dengan sistem-sistem di persekitarannya yang mengehadkannya untuk memperoleh kualiti hidup yang lebih baik dan seterusnya menghalang untuk berintegrasi dengan masyarakarat. Oleh yang demikian, intervensi untuk membendung gelandangan bekas banduan dan membantu mengembalikan mereka ke pangkuan masyarakat memerlukan gandingan bersepadu daripada sistem formal dan tidak formal dalam masyarakat.
