Non intrusive detection system for sleeping student at school
Ashardi Abas
The role of poverty rate, medical diagnoses, napping and medication on sleep habits contribute to the academic performance of the children. The problem of sleeping student in class room is an underestimated problem in the Malaysia. The goal of our project was to produce a non-intrusive, portable and easy to use solution to detect whether or not a person was falling asleep while at classroom. The methods used in our system were sensors to detect whether or not the eye was open or closed and sensors to detect whether or not the head was dipped below a certain angle. This data was transmitted wirelessly where a microcontroller was used to determine whether or not to activate our alarm system. Our project was developed in C code and testing and verification were performed to validate the accuracy of the sensors and alarm decision system..

Anida Sarudin
The aim of this study is to assess the teaching practices of Malay Language teachers in implementing the elements of higher-order thinking skills in the teaching and learning of Malay Language using the Cognitive Research Trust (CoRT) Scale. Essentially, the scales comprises six devices, namely CoRT 1 (Breadth), CoRT 2 (Organization), CoRT 3 (Interaction), CoRT 4 (Critical Thinking), CoRT 5 (Information and Feeling), and CoRT 6 (Action) that are related to CoRT tests, namely PMI (Plus, Minus, Interesting), CAF (Consider All Factors), C&S (Consequence & Sequel), AGO (Aims, Goal, Objectives), FIP (First, Important, Priorities), APC (Alternatives, Possibilities, Choice), and OPV (Other People’s Views). This study used a qualitative approach using the observation method to elicit data from a study sample consisting of six Malay Language teachers from several schools with as sizeable indigenous or Orang Asli student population in the district of Batang Padang. A descriptive qualitative an.....

Need Analysis: Competency Development Measurement Instrument in Mastering the Content of Design and Technology Subject in High School
Ridzwan Che Rus
This paper intended to discuss the requirement analysis regarding the implementation of Design and Technology (D&T) subject in which had been introduced back in 2017 for all Malaysian high school. D&T is a performance-based subject, which includes the implementation of teaching and learning as well as assessment based on the standards of achievement. Therefore, the focus of this paper is to delve deeper into the challenges that came with the implementation of D&T subject and the needs for the development of measuring instruments in which includes the mastering of content knowledge, skill mastery, and the ability to grasp the values in D&T subject. This study is a research of quantitative methods and data collected through surveys. Questionnaire was used as the main instrument in this study. The finding among 100 respondents shows that 90% of respondents expressed the biggest challenge that they have to face is the lack of experience and teaching a nonoption subject, low in knowledge an.....

Town planners involvement in the planning and design process of Green Building Projects in Malaysia
Nor Kalsum Mohd Isa
Green building is a holistic project that requires integrated planning and design approaches through the involvement of multidisciplinary professions. Green building projects in Malaysia usually involve developers, architects, engineers and energy consultants to make decisions in planning and design. The role of town planners in the project is limited especially when it comes to getting the approval for planning from the local authorities. This study aimed to identify the level of town planners’ involvement in the planning and design process of green building projects in Malaysia. It also offered recommendations on how the green building projects could be supported by the town planners. The data were collected in two tiers of interviews. A first series of interviews was conducted among 22 town planners who represented town planning organizations from the private and public sectors in Malaysia. The data were analyzed qualitatively using the content analysis technique. Then, a second s.....

An evaluation of content creation for personalised learning using digital ict literacy module among aboriginal students (mlict-oa)
Dr. Nor Syazwani Mat Salleh
ICT in the Malaysian education system serves as a tool to accomplish the National Education Blueprint 2015-2025. Under this blueprint, privileged groups such as the aborigines or Malaysian aboriginals will be given equal opportunity in education. However, a specific classroom teaching method is required to maintain the aboriginal students’ focus and attention on their learning experiences due to their unique paradigm of learning. This study used the Partial Least Square (PLS) and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) tool to examine the factors influencing personalised learning and digital self-learning ICT literacy module. It also measured the impact of personalised learning and digital ICT literacy module among secondary aboriginal students. This study involved 92 aboriginal students who participated in a transferable skills and ICT programme held in a public university in Malaysia. Results show that personalised learning positively supported the use of a digital ICT literacy module .....

Oxoaporphine alkaloids from the barks of Platymitra siamensis Craib (Annonaceae) and their cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cancer cell line
Mohamad Syahrizal Ahmad
Study on the chemical constituents of the dichloromethane (DCM) crude extract of Platymitra siamensis Craib has led to the isolation of four oxoaporphine alkaloids. The compounds were identified as liriodenine (1), Omethylmoschatoline (2), lysicamine (3) and cepharadione-A (4) which were isolated first time from this species. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on their spectral data (1H, 13C and LCMS) and reports in the literature. Here we observed that, only alkaloid 1 exhibited obvious cytotoxic effects against MCF-7 human breast cancer cells line with IC50 value of 31.26 µM. This work is the first attempt on phytochemical and bioactivity study on the genus of Platymitra...

Diversity of internal governance and financial reporting quality: post-GFC of an emerging market
Anuar Sarun
We examine whether wide-ranging board diversity reduce earnings management from the emerging market of Malaysia. We contribute to the prior literature in several ways. First, while previous literature are mainly focusing on the developing economy, our study is the first that examine the relationship between all-inclusive set of diverse board characteristics and earnings management from the emerging economy. Second, we concentrate to the post-GFC period, where we intentionally avoid the GFC, a situation where managerial opportunistic behaviour to engage in earnings management is more prevalent due to economic reason. Third, we cover the potential complementary or substitutive effects of board diversity characteristics on earnings management. Using 1400 listed firms in emerging market of Malaysia over the period of 2009-2015, in contrast to our prediction, our findings demonstrated that the relationship between board diversity characteristics and earnings management in the Malaysia is mi.....

FEA simulation of fluidic based pressure sensor for differrent shaped membrane
Mohd Norzaidi Mat Nawi
In designing the fluidic based pressure sensor, the shape of the membrane is important in order to obtain maximum performance. The material used and the liquid inside the sensor is also important and deserve proper consideration. . In this work, the analysis of the membrane, materials and liquid using finite element analysis (FEA) are presented. The FEA simulation of the different shapes including square and rectangular shapes were carried out. The applied pressure and the dimension of selected membrane were varied in order to study the membrane performance. The result shows that the square shape produced the highest displacement of 4.7 mm compared to the other shapes. In terms of dimension, maximum performance can be achieved with a large area of membrane facing the applied pressure. The different types of membrane material andliquids that were used were also discussed. Two commonly used materials, Polyimide (PI) andPolydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were chosen for this analysis. As for the .....
