Development phase of traditional dance in the state of Perak, Malaysia: a literature review

This paper aims to review literature regarding the development phase of traditional dance in the state of Perak, Malaysia. This development phase will be looked into by reviewing Perak’s history, with a focus on the art of Malay traditional dance. Based on this literature review, it is found that there is difficulty in finding reference materials on the traditional dance of Perak as there is a lack of documentation. Parts of the literature being reviewed include (i) the history of Perak, (ii) culture in general, (iii) traditional arts in Perak, and (iv) traditional dance in Perak. Each topic is discussed, exploring the existence of the art of traditional dance in Perak that brought about cultural symbols in each area of the state. Creative movement is one of the teaching and learning methods that helps to develop one’s potential in communicating expressions creatively, applied through a series of movements. This type of learning relies on imaginations to explore movements, depending on the types of movements to be created. Exploration of creative movements by using variety of props lead to the freedom of ideas in creative imaginations. The ability to master the process of movements’ creation by using props is essential in giving interpretations and forming the thoughts towards active and dynamic levels, to improve imaginative abilities. Contemporary Malay dance in Singapore-riding the waves of change

Malay dance in Singapore has evolved dramatically since the birth of the nation in 1965. However, Malay dance itself has a long history stretching back hundreds of years in the Malay Archipelago with Arabic and Portuguese influences shaping the various dances over the centuries. This research aims to capture the moment when the paradigm shift occurred and the subsequent transformation of the Malay dance scene in Singapore. One of the aims of this research is to record the evolvement of Malay dance for the preservation of Malay cultural heritage as part of Singapore’s history for future generations. Pedagogical Competency of Dance Instructors in The Training of Malay Court Dance Skills Among Upper Secondary Students at Johor National Art School

Dance pedagogy is a complex and dynamic field of competency that involves various skills and self-appearance. Therefore, dance instructors must widen the scope of their competency to strengthen and improve their level. This research aimed to identify the competency of dance instructors teaching the practical subject of Malay Court Dance based on factors including the components of pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, and professionalism. The data was collected from interviews with the instructors and was analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings indicated that the instructors’ competency level development could be mapped into three dimensions, namely orientation, agent, and competency content. It was concluded that art schools in Malaysia need to develop dance instructors’ competency in terms of (1) 21st-century learning needs, (2) vertical and horizontal knowledge sharing, (3) workshop, study tour, and competition, and (4) standardization of technological development relevant .....
