This study was conducted with the aim to portray the level in which the African
American women were humiliated and dominated by the males, generally, and the
whites, particularly, during and after the Civil Right Movement. Three research
objectives were formed to achieve the aim. These research objectives were to investigate
how the African American women were racially oppressed by the whites, to examine
how the black American women suffered from patriarchal oppression by the black men
and to examine the impact of racial and patriarchal oppression practiced against the black
women. Four selected novels by Alice Walker were analysed to achieve these objectives.
The theory employed in this study was the Black Feminist Critical Theory and
additionally, this theory was chosen as the conceptual framework to analyse the themes in
the selected novels that incorporated black feminist issues with racial matters. Black
