An empirical investigation of the twin deficits hypothesis in Nigeria: evidence from cointegration techniques
Abu, Nurudeen
Nigeria has not been able to generate adequate revenue to match her expenditure over the years. It is not surprising therefore, that the country frequently operates deficit budget with its negative consequences on the current account balance. This study investigates the twin deficits hypothesis (that is, budget deficits and current account deficits relationship) for Nigeria over the 1981-2017 period using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) estimation techniques. The result of the cointegration test indicates that there is a long-run relationship between budget deficits and current account deficits (along with oil prices and interest rate). The estimation results show that increases in budget deficits lead to increases in current account deficits in Nigeria in the short-run and the long-run. This finding validates the Keynesian assertion, but refutes the Ricardian Equivalence Hypothesis with respect to the relationship between the two def.....

How have covid-19 confirmed cases and deaths affected stock markets? evidence from Nigeria
Abu, Nurudeen
This study assesses the effect of COVID-19 proxied by the number of confirmed cases of the infection and deaths on Nigeria?s stock market over the 23rd March to 11th September 2020 period using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL), canonical cointegrating regression (CCR), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) and fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) techniques. The bounds test to cointegration result reveals that a long-run relationship exists between COVID-19 and Nigeria?s stock market (along with oil prices and exchange rate). The results of the various estimations demonstrate that COVID-19 (proxied by the number of confirmed cases of infection) has a negative and significant impact on stock market performance, while the number deaths has a positive and significant impact on the market in the long-run. In addition, oil prices and exchange rate have a significant and positive effect on stock market performance in the long-run. Similar results were found for sub-sectors .....

Evaluating the psychometric properties of economic literacy measures: a systematic review
Bamiro, Nurudeen Babatunde
Prior studies often misinterpreted economic literacy concepts, constructs, and psychometric properties as related but distinct ideas. This often led to inaccurate measurement choices and poor generalisation of research outcomes. This research investigates economic literacy's conceptual clarity, factors influencing it, psychometric properties of measures, and suggests suitable instruments for its assessment. The PRISMA protocol was used in the study, while data were collected from WOS, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Out of the 126 publications from 2014 to 2023, 24 studies met inclusion criteria. The quality of the articles that met the inclusion criteria was assessed using MMAT tools. The result indicated that the measurement of economic literacy's depends on theoretical perspectives. Psychometric qualities of economic literacy assessment are influenced by theoretical perspectives, social context, and the chosen unit of analysis. Additionally, criterion-based measurements tend to focus on.....

From classroom to society: exploring the role of economic literacy on public pedagogy
Bamiro, Nurudeen B.
This study delves into the powerful role of economic literacy in sparking public pedagogy and fostering civic engagement. It examines how formal education, innovative teaching strategies, and active public discourse can work together to enhance individuals' economic understanding and participation in society. The study is guided by the PRISMA protocol. The study identified 31 high-quality studies that meet the criteria of relevance, methodological rigor, and recent publication. The study focuses on exploring the role of economic literacy in promoting public pedagogy by addressing three key areas: identifying effective teaching strategies that foster economic literacy, examining classroom environments that extend economic literacy into public pedagogy, and investigating how classroom-based economic literacy programs influence students' engagement in public economic discourse. The review reveals that economic literacy enhances public engagement and drives greater participation in economi.....
