Investigating the predictive effects of depression and self-esteem on suicide ideation among Malaysia east coast undergraduate students
Azlina Abu Bakar @ Mohd
Today, suicide is a significant, urgent and serious issue in public health. Studies on suicide ideation in Malaysian young adults were rarely conducted for the public due to cultural and religious factors. Numerous studies on depression and suicide among young people in Malaysia have often been conducted in developed and high-population densities such as Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Pulau Pinang, Sabah, and Sarawak. In contrast, states on the East Coast of Malaysia recorded fewer studies on suicide and depression by researchers. Thus, this study investigates the relationships and predictive effects of depression and self-esteem on suicide ideation among undergraduate students. Data were gathered from a sample of 439 (18.5% male; 81.5% female) undergraduate students aged 19-26 with an average age of 22 (SD=1.33) who completed measures on depression, self-esteem, suicide ideation and socio-demographic profiles. In addition to descriptive statistics, quantitative data employed correlation and .....

Public health in the post COVID-19 pandemic and mental health onslaught: social isolation based on a biopsychosocial approach
Azlina Abu Bakar @ Mohd
The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled profound deficiencies in global mental health care and prevention, posing a disproportionate threat to public health worldwide. Social isolation, a consequence of the pandemic, has strained the boundaries of human cooperation, giving rise to a spectrum of mental health challenges including stress, fear, grief, anxiety, and depression. This research empirically investigates the concept of social distance concerning individuals with mental health conditions while considering biopsychosocial determinants, notably social media influence and attitudes. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on a sample comprising 424 students from public universities along the eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The findings reveal that attitudes towards mental health and the influence of social media play substantial roles in predicting social distance from individuals with mental health conditions. These predictive factors contribute significantly, accounting for up to.....

Noor Insyiraah Abu Bakar, Abdul Talib Mohamed Hashim, Azlina Abu Bakar @ Mohd, Mohd Muslim Md Zalli, Izazol Idris
The purpose of this study is to explore the teaching approaches that are appropriate for juveniles so that they can gain knowledge and skills in line with current demands and develop their potential. A qualitative approach was employed, specifically a constructivist grounded theory research design, involving 15 teachers and three administrators from the three rehabilitation schools. To ensure an in-depth exploration of these issues, data was collected using semi-structured interviews. Observations were also carried out in order to support the interview data and to give a full picture from various perspectives. The findings showed that the teachers practiced various teaching approaches that were appropriate for the conditions and problems of the juveniles at the schools, as detailed in this article. Additionally, the results also revealed that teachers need to choose appropriate teaching approaches to ensure that effective learning can be provided to juveniles, who on average do not hav.....

Noor Insyiraah Abu Bakar, Mohd Muslim Md Zalli, Zahari Suppian, Azlina Abu Bakar @ Mohd, Faridah Hanim Yahya
Resocialization is an important process for a juvenile, and it can be achieved through various means, one of which is religion. This article solely focuses on the resocialization of juveniles through the implementation of a religious approach. A case study design was used involving two rehabilitation schools housing male and female juveniles who have broken the law and whose ages range from 10 to 18. Two schools, each housing a different gender, were chosen to provide a more detailed understanding of the resocialization process. A total of 10 teachers and 15 juveniles were selected as respondents through the purposive sampling technique. This technique allows the selection of appropriate individuals based on the scope of the study. Data was gathered through in-depth interviews with all respondents. To support the interview data, observations at the research sites were also carried out. The findings revealed that the implementation of Islamic education and programs helps the resocializa.....

Noor Insyiraah binti Abu Bakar, Mohd Muslim Md Zalli, Izazol Idris, Azlina Abu Bakar, Abdul Talib Mohamed Hashim, Nor Hasnida Che Md Ghazali, Mohd Nazir Md Zabit
Effective learning is crucial for helping young people gain knowledge, skills, and overall development. This study aims to identify key factors necessary for effective learning in rehabilitation schools for juveniles. A constructivist grounded theory (CGT) approach was employed to gain a deeper understanding. Fifteen teachers, three administrators, and five education experts participated in the study using purposive sampling. Data was collected via in-depth interviews with these participants. The thematic analysis revealed four main themes essential for effective learning among juveniles: teachers (qualifications, teaching methods, and attitudes), juveniles (emotions and interest in learning), rehabilitation schools (administrator support and learning facilities), and community (support from families and assistance from governmental and non-governmental organizations). This research highlights the elements that all stakeholders need to address to ensure effective learning for juveniles.....
