This thesis addresses the challenge of authentically integrating traditional Chinese musicalelements into Western violin performance, focusing specifically on how glissando andportamento techniques convey cultural narratives and emotional depth in selected works byChen Gang and Li Guoquan (The Sun Shines on Tashkurgan, Violin Concerto: ButterflyLovers, The Fishermen's Song at Eventide). The study aimed to:(1) analyze the adaptation ofthese techniques for violin, (2) investigate their culturalemotional implications, and (3) develop a culturally informed performance guide. Employing practice-led methodologythrough score analysis, technical experimentation, and contextual study of Central Asian folktraditions, key findings reveal that glissando and portamento function as essential conduitsbetween Western technique and Chinese aesthetics articulating regional identities (e.g., Uyghurdance energy in Tashkurgan) and embodying Erhu-inspired vocality in Butterfly Lovers.
