1 | 2019 thesis | The effects of task-based language teaching and audio-lingual teaching approach in Mandarin oral skills learning Chua, Hui Wen This study investigates the effects of Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) andÂ
Audio-Lingual  Teaching  Approach  (ALTA)  on oral  skills  learning  and  learningÂ
motivation among non-native Mandarin in Teaching Mandarin as a Third Language (TMTL). TBLT Â
applied Adaptation of Willis’s TBL Framework, while ALTA applied Sar?çoban’s dialogueÂ
memorisation. Quasi experimental design was used in the study with convenience sampling of 21Â
students (TBLT) and 22 students (ALTA). Simulated conversation oral test and MotivationalÂ
Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) were employed. Independent sample t-test was Â
used to examine if there are any differences between the two groups, and paired sample t-testÂ
was used to identify the differences between Test 1 and Test 2 for both groups, in the Â
aspect of students’ performances. The findings showed..... 1311 hits |
2 | 2019 article | Factors influencing foreign language learners’ motivation in continuing to learn Mandarin Chua, Hui Wen The study prime motive was to identify factors that encourage learners to be motivated to continue to learn Mandarin. Campbell and Storch (2011) guiding questionnaire was adapted through the interview sessions among 11 Mandarin level two learners of different grades at one of the universities in Kelantan. The learners were interviewed in person in Bahasa Malaysia. The interview sessions were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim and translated into English. The inquiry revealed that non-native Mandarin learners were motivated to continue to learn Mandarin due to the importance of Mandarin in the aspect of employability, self-interest and improving Mandarin grade. The study gives insight to teachers to plan their teaching to match with the learners’ demands that are related to their future career building, hence the learning must consider real life situation. It is also recommended that having interesting and interactive learning activities are encouraged to boost learners’ learni..... 641 hits |
3 | 2020 article | Assessing the validity and reliability of creative thinking skills module in a pilot study on engineering undergraduate in Malaysia Chua, Yaw Long This research paper presents the outcome of a research conducted to assess and determine the Validity and Reliability coefficient of Creative Thinking Skills for Conceptual Engineering Design Module administered to engineering undergraduates at a private institution of higher learning. The Creative Thinking Skills Module features few proposed creative thinking tools such as Brain Sketching, Mind Maps and Morphological Analysis. The validity consists of module content validity, and session and activity validity, evaluated by a group of five experts. The Cronbach Alpha value was determined through conducting a pilot study in a local private university where mechanical engineering undergraduate underwent the module workshop and activity. Questionnaires were given to respective experts and students respondents to measure the validity and reliability level of the module, sessions and activities.

5 | 2021 thesis | Development of creative thinking skills module for engineering design process Chua, Yaw Long The objective of this study was to design and develop a creative thinking skills module
for engineering design process at tertiary level. The study also aimed to evaluate the
effectiveness of the developed module in improving the creative ability of the
engineering undergraduates. The module was developed using the ADDIE instructional
design model. Mixed method was utilised during the evaluation phase at the studied
university. The participants were recruited from third year engineering students
enrolled in an advanced engineering design related module. Quantitative and qualitative
data were collected using Torrance Test of Creative Thinking, Creative Solution
Diagnosis Scale and an open-ended questionnaire. The control group comprised 30
students while 32 students formed the intervention group. Quantitative data was
analysed using Paired Sample T - Test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann-Whitney
U Test. The feedback from the participants who completed the intervention prog..... 1445 hits |
6 | 2021 article | The effects of task-based language teaching and audio-lingual teaching approach in mandarin learning motivation Wen, Chua Hui This study investigates the effects of Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) and the Audio-Lingual Teaching Approach (ALTA) on learning motivation among non-native Mandarin learners in the Teaching of Mandarin as a Third Language (TMTL). The TBLT applied is an adaptation of Willis's TBL Framework, while the ALTA applied is an adaptation of Sar?oban's dialogue memorisation. A quasi-experimental design was used in this study, with 21 students selected through convenience sampling for TBLT and 22 students for ALTA. Motivational Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) was employed. A descriptive analysis was conducted to compare if any changes in learning motivation and learning anxiety components for both groups before and after TBLT and ALTA were adopted in the learning interventions. The descriptive analysis showed that there were changes in the aspect of learning motivation and learning anxiety component. The result indicated that there was an increment in the number of students ..... 5079 hits |
7 | 2022 article | Malaysian non-native chinese students challenges and learning strategies in chinese characters learning Chua, Hui Wen This study investigates the challenges faced by non-native Chinese learners in learning Chinese characters and their learning strategies. This research applied quantitative research, where the questionnaire was delivered at the end of the semester to 370 students of Mandarin level two, selected through convenience sampling. The descriptive analysis showed that most of the students stated that being literate in Chinese characters and learning many Chinese characters was the most challenging act while corresponding between characters and their pronunciations was the least challenging. Next, the students listed repetitively memorising Chinese characters as the preferred learning strategy, followed by imitating each stroke of a Chinese character and picturing what Chinese characters look like in their minds. The finding of this study contradicts other research studies since the students in this study did not perceive the "lack of correspondence between characters and their pronunciation in..... 202 hits |
Manakala k..... 641 hits |
