Leadership, career growth and socialization paths of Malaysian public school managers

The main purpose of this study was to understand the nature of learning for school managers in government schools as they learn and make decisions at different stages of the socialization stages from accession to retirement. A phenomenological approach was utilized and participants were selected from excellent and successful school managers through elite sampling. The data collection methods employed to achieve the purpose of the study were mainly in-depth interviews with the participants. The thematic findings which emerged from this data included four socialization stages namely: (1) Entry into Headship; (2) Identity Formation; (3) Making a Difference; and (4) Reformulation of Personal Values. The study concluded that the findings of this study provided a helpful guide for understanding school managers’ learning in the socialization process towards achieving better leadership and decision making. Refleksi tenaga pengajar terhadap kepemimpinan distributif dan tekanan kerja dalam pendidikan teknik dan vokasional

Kepemimpinan mempengaruhi tekanan kerja dalam kalangan tenaga pengajar. Tekanan kerja menyebabkan prestasi dan kualiti kerja menurun. Oleh itu, gaya kepemimpinan yang lebih fleksibel dan bercorak perkongsian perlu diamalkan dalam sistem pendidikan. Tujuan kajian ini adalah untuk menentukan perkaitan di antara kepemimpinan yang bercorak perkongsian iaitu kepemimpinan distributif dan tekanan kerja dalam pendidikan teknik dan vokasional. Kajian ini adalah berbentuk kualitatif iaitu temu bual separa berstruktur. Responden kajian dipilih dengan teknik persampelan bertujuan iaitu mempunyai minima setahun pengalaman mengajar dalam pendidikan teknik dan vokasional. Seramai empat responden iaitu tenaga pengajar daripada pendidikan teknik dan vokasional telah dipilih untuk sesi temu bual. Data kajian dianalisis dengan kaedah analisis kandungan. Investigating the relationship between teacher quality and students

Empowerment is the delegation of power to teachers for sustainability of education system. When teachers are empowered, students’ academic performance will improve. The study investigated the relationship between teacher quality and students’ academic performance with empowerment as a mediator. About 379 teachers were selected randomly from public secondary schools, Kwara state, Nigeria. Structural equation model was utilized to test the hypothesized model. Based on the result of the study, teacher quality was positively related to students’ academic performance which meant that quality of teachers determine the success of students. Insignificant relationship was found between teacher quality and principal empowerment practices which showed that the relationship did not exist. Also, the relationship between principal empowerment practices and students’ academic performance was tested of which the results revealed as insignificant.
