A study on the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English : language competencies perspective
Mostafa Nor Azmi, Lim Chong Hin, Mohd. Khaja Farah Natchiar, Muhammad Mazura@Mastura, Mansur Rosnidar,
This study investigated the English language competencies of students in rural primary schools and the problems they faced in the process of learning Mathematics and Science in English in the classrooms. Students and teachers from eight primary schools in the districts of Batang Padang, Perak Tengah and Hilir Perak in the state of Perak were involved in the study. Instruments included language tests, survey questionnaires and interview checklists. Data analysis results produced several findings. Students generally possessed better skills in listening and reading in English in Mathematics and Science. They were weakest in speaking, followed by their writing skills. However, the biggest problem was their overall mastery of the English language. As a result, there was a tendency for teachers to use both Malay and English languages during classroom instructions. There were also tendencies for students from better home language background and higher socio-economic status to have better Engl.....

A study of closure in a nursing textbooks and journals: a corpus based study
Mazura Mastura Muhammad
The prime aim of the study is to measure the degree of closure of one form of clinical language (specifically nursing textbooks and journals) in order, first, to determine whether these two restricted forms of clinical language can be rightly categorized as a sublanguage; second, to understand better the linguistic features of the language of the nursing domain; and finally, to better understand the nature of sublanguage. In this study, nursing textbook and journal corpora are compared to weather reports and the BNC Sampler. The findings show that none of the linguistic inventories of these corpora approach closure. Investigations conducted on the weather reports show that the corpus approaches closure at many levels. The BNC Sampler, however, behaves exactly as unconstrained language is expected to. The findings show that the nursing textbooks and journals seem to belong in a middle area between highly constrained language and highly unconstrained language. The findings of the study r.....

The implementation of the fulbright English teaching assistant program in Malaysia: an evaluation on students language proficiency
Mazura Mastura Muhammad
Few research has been conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the ETA Program in enhancing the students’ English Language (EL) proficiency since its implementation in 2012. This study aims to evaluate the ETA Program implemented in Malaysian secondary schools. This study employed both qualitative (interviews) and quantitative methods (written and oral tests) in data collection involving a total of nine (9) rural secondary schools in seven (7) states. Additionally, a total of 59 EL teachers and 399 students, were selected for the study. Written and oral tests results showed significant differences between the performances of students who were guided by the ETA (co-teach classes) and students who were not guided by the ETA (non-co-teach classes). However, the written and oral test scores of students from co-teach classes were not significantly better than students from non-co-teach classes. The mean scores for both written and oral tests of students in co-teach classes were low a.....

Using technologised computational corpus-driven linguistics study on the vocabulary uses among advanced Malaysian upper primary school English as a Second Language Learners (ESL) in Northern Region
Mazura @ Mastura Muhammad
The vocabulary used by advanced Malaysian upper primary school learners is unknown after the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a corpus-driven study. This study primarily uses data from a learner corpus. This main purpose of this paper is to fill in this knowledge gap by examining the vocabulary usage in extended writing by advanced Malaysian upper primary school learners in the Northern Region. The study uses a corpus-driven research strategy and a quantitative methodology. Some 160 advanced upper primary school learners from the Northern Region, Malaysia were included in the study. They attended eight national primary schools with strong English programmes in the Northern Region. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the samples. This study's main corpus-driven toolkit (LancsBox) was used to analyse the data. A total of 46,185 tokens from 160 extended writing tasks were analysed. The word frequencies were counted both raw and normalised. Results showed that 160 advanced Malay.....

Vocabulary index as a sustainable resource for teaching extended writing in the post-pandemic era
Mazura @ Mastura Muhammad
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Malaysian English teachers identified a pressing need to support upper primary school pupils, particularly those in the upper levels, in the effective composition of extended writing. Additionally, these educators required more innovative methodologies for teaching vocabulary in this context. Consequently, the current study aimed to develop a vocabulary index as a suggested resource for Malaysian English teachers instructing upper primary school pupils on extended writing. To achieve this, a quantitative computational research strategy and corpus-driven research design were employed. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 560 advanced upper primary school pupils from 28 schools, each with high English performance in the capital of each state and the federal territory of Malaysia, who produced a total of 152,187 words in extended writing for analysis. LancsBox, a primary computational linguistics application, was used for data processing......
