The use of Metaphors analysis in self-help books EFL learners: a corpus-based study
Nadia Hassan
Understanding figurative language in literature can be puzzling for students due to its ungrammatical form. Corpus-based metaphor analysis, however, provides the lens assisting the students to learn this figurative language. The objectives of this study are 1. to determine the variation of metaphors used in two types of self-help books about teenager’s life, emotions, education, and finance; 2. to analyse the manner the authors manifest each concept through metaphors; 3. to discuss how the findings can contribute to the learning of metaphor in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods. The instruments used are a corpus that were extracted from two popular English self-help books which are The Chicken Soup for Teenage Soul and Rich Dad Poor Dad for Teens; Wmatrix concordance software supported with the USAS semantic tagger that can help in finding the frequency of occurrence of life, emotions, education and finance keywords rela.....

The relations of metacognitive awareness, multiple intelligences, and gender with undergraduates perceived motivation in using multimedia
Nurul Nadia Hassan
Learning Introductory Programming has always been challenging to computer science and information technology undergraduates and such problems, most notably comes from the lack of metacognitive awareness. Other important factors are multiple intelligences, gender, and motivation in using learning tools can also have a huge impact on learning the subject matter. A survey study was carried out with the aim to investigate the relationship among metacognitive awareness, gender and multiple intelligences towards perceived motivation of the students in learning using multimedia tools. 103 fresh undergraduates were recruited to participate in the survey. The data analysed using Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analysis. The result showed that the correlation between metacognitive awareness and motivation in using multimedia tools was significant, positive, and moderately strong. These finding suggest that students with higher metacognitive awareness will be highly motivated i.....

The impact of MoSTMaT on computing students motivated strategies for learning and metacognitive awareness
Nurul Nadia Hassan
This study aims to develop and evaluate a learning tool: Motivated Strategies Thinking Map Tool (MoSTMaT) on motivated strategies for learning (MSL) and metacognitive awareness (MA) among computing students. The MoSTMaT tool was developed based on the principles of multimedia message design by combining multimedia elements and thinking maps. The research design consists of a survey and quasi-experimental study with pre-post test. The survey study sample involved 209 students, while 128 students from a public university were selected as participants in the experimental study using cluster random sampling. The experimental study involved three groups namely MoSTMaT group with 37 students, printed module group with 40 students, and control group with 51 students. Assessment was done using the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) and the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics inclu.....
