Redefining classroom pottery: cement-based composites as eco-friendly substitutes for clay
Sailaja Ramachandran
This article addresses the challenges in Visual Arts Education (VAE) of acquiring suitable materials for pottery instruction. It investigates the viability of cement-based composites as an alternative to clay in classrooms. The research involved 75 undergraduates and 33 VAE teachers and employed qualitative methods such as interviews, questionnaires, workshops, and field notes to gather and triangulate data. The study identified a significant gap, indicating a deficit in hands on experiences in pottery instruction at secondary education level. Thus, the Creinnomic Media Kit was designed and developed using the Addie Model to bridge this gap and to specifically enhance teachers’ content knowledge and instructional effectiveness in using cement-based composites. Framed within Ausubel’s Meaningful Learning Theory which emphasizes the importance of hands-on learning, the study demonstrated that cement-based composites are practical, versatile and cost effective for pottery instruction......

Exploring cement-based composites innovative applications in visual arts education
Sailaja Ramachandran
This article explores the application of cement-based composites as an innovative crafting medium in pottery, 3D wall hangings, sculptures, and relief murals. This problem-solving visual arts pedagogy serves to provide insights to teachers and students on viewing cement-based composites as an alternative to clay and concrete. This new knowledge aims to inform innovative approaches to the role of the visual arts education. Cement-based composites involving the use of recycled paper, sawdust and Styrofoam, offer a platform for artistic expression and sustainability in the crafting realm. The article discusses the material composition, properties, crafting techniques, and artistic possibilities inherent in cement-based composites across each application. In the light of encouraging sustainable and eco-friendly projects, papercrete has been found to be a versatile and transformative crafting medium for various projects. This study has also uncovered an implicit interconnectivity between in.....

Thesis
Creinnomic media kits alternative media in teaching pottery and weaving for secondary school art teachers
Sailaja Ramachandran
Visual Art Education (VAE) teachers often face challenges in acquiring traditional materials for pottery and weaving, limiting instruction to theoretical aspects without practical application. This study aims to address the gap by exploring the use of alternative materials such as cement-based composites and recycled materials for teaching pottery and weaving at the secondary school level. Concurrently, the aim is to develop a comprehensive media kit to improve VAE teachers' pedagogical knowledge, teaching skills and foster creativity among students through practical experience in pottery and weaving. This research employs qualitative methods, involving 75 undergraduates and 33 secondary school VAE teachers. Data collection methods include interviews, questionnaires, workshops and field notes conducted at a local university and six secondary schools. The design and development of the proposed media kit follow the ADDIE Model, and incorporates Ausubel's Meaningful Learning Theory to fac.....
