Intelligence begins with learning to read. If one can recognize Chinese characters at an early age, he/she will be able to read at an e a rly age, and the door of wisdom will open earlier. KSSR states that the golden age of recognizing Chinese characters is at Year 1 and 2. The focus of teaching and learning at this stage is recognizing Chinese characters. However, many pupils lost the char a cters they have learned after a certain period of time. Inability to master a sufficient number of Chinese characters h as slowed down students' entry into the reading stage and hindered them from enjoying reading books.
