1 | 2024 Article | The Current Practise and Challenges of the Grassroot Football Academy in Indonesia Zulakbal Abd Karim, Jaffry Zakaria The purpose of the current research was to explore the key factors in the development of grass-roots football in Indonesia, including the current development process and challenges. This research was qualitative research. A semi-structured interview was conducted to gather the data. Through interviews, the researcher gathered the participants overview and perspective regarding the current practice and challenges of grass-roots football in Indonesia. In this case, 7 coaches at a grassroots football academy in Indonesia were involved in this research, as determined by the purposive sampling method. The participants were chosen based on their coaching experience, which ranged from 5 to 16 years. A qualitative data analysis application, namely N-Vivo, was utilized to analyze the data. As the sport continues to grow, it demands an accelerated development of players and adjustments to their needs. However, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has created a curriculum that only focuses on the physical, tactical, and technical aspects, ignoring the psychological aspect. This study aimed to investigate the role of psychology in the development of football players in Indonesia, focusing on the weaknesses of the current curriculum. The development path of a football player toward becoming a professional player involves four main aspects: physical, technical, tactical, and psychological ones. Objectives. This study aimed to examine the psychological characteristics of the environment that influence and contribute to the development of football players under 17 years old in Indonesia and Malaysia. Materials and methods. This study used a qualitative approach, namely evolved grounded theory, and the data collection process was conducted using three distinct methods: semi-structured interviews, observation, and document analysis. Twenty-five coaches participated in this study, comprising fifteen coaches from various football academies in Malaysia and ten coaches from Indonesia.
