4 | 2019 article | Binary logistic regression analysis of instructional leadership factors affecting English language literacy in Primary Schools Ramlee bin Ismail This paper discusses the factors contributing to student achievement in English language literacy in primary schools within Sibu division, Sarawak, Malaysia. The study involved 694 teachers who taught in 105 lower primary schools. Binary logistic regression was applied to predict the instructional leadership’s influence on student achievement in literacy. The findings revealed that one dimension of instructional leadership - supervising and evaluating instruction - emerged as strong predictors of literacy. The result indicated that schools were more than 17 times more likely to achieve 100% literacy rate when the instruction processes were supervised and evaluated by the headmasters. Supervision and evaluation of instruction had a positive influence on students’ achievement for English language literacy, hence making this a possible course of action for school heads. 6 | 2019 article | Economic literacy: does it matter for policy understanding? Ramlee Ismail The quality of human capital is indispensable for economic growth and sustainability. The developed nations have shown evidence of a positive relationship between education and economic development. In all respects, a better understanding of economics among citizens has led to more efficiency in implementing economic policies. In this paper, we explore a possible relationship between economic literacy and policy understanding. Policy knowledge, interest and explanation are measured through policy understanding. This study used the students’ teachers as a sample and found that economic literacy was below 50 per cent. Meanwhile, the level of policy understanding was moderate. Interestingly, our findings showed that economic literacy is not strongly associated with economic policy understanding. 7 | 2020 article | Active learning in Economic subject: a case study at secondary school Ramlee Ismail This study aims to investigate the impact of active learning in the economics subject in Perak secondary school on students’ achievement, motivation, interest, and social interaction. This study applies a quasi-experimental research design, which involves the control and the treatment groups with thirty and thirty-four participants, respectively. The active learning materials for the treatment group were based on active learning methods provided by the Ministry of Education with support from structured lesson plans namely: simulations, discussions, brainstorming, case studies, and visits in the school’s compound. A questionnaire is also used to measure students’ motivation, interest and social interaction before and after the intervention. The influence of imperialism on the development of her career as an artist seems to be unnoticed even by Saloma herself and previous studies on her only conclude that Saloma was merely a singer with a melodious voice, actress, fashion icon, and a wife to a renowned artist, P. Ramlee. Cultural imperialism in Malaya is deemed to have influenced Saloma until she sparks the birth of popular culture in the Federation of Malaya. Therefore, this research would scrutinise the extent to which cultural imperialism in the Federation of Malaya has influenced Saloma in shaping popular culture in the country from the colonialism era until the post-independence era in the Federated Malay States.
