Leadership, career growth and socialization paths of Malaysian public school managers

The main purpose of this study was to understand the nature of learning for school managers in government schools as they learn and make decisions at different stages of the socialization stages from accession to retirement. A phenomenological approach was utilized and participants were selected from excellent and successful school managers through elite sampling. The data collection methods employed to achieve the purpose of the study were mainly in-depth interviews with the participants. The thematic findings which emerged from this data included four socialization stages namely: (1) Entry into Headship; (2) Identity Formation; (3) Making a Difference; and (4) Reformulation of Personal Values. The study concluded that the findings of this study provided a helpful guide for understanding school managers’ learning in the socialization process towards achieving better leadership and decision making. Identiti tempat pelancongan bagi bandar-bandar kecil lama: kajian kes Teluk Intan dan Batu Gajah

Kajian ini bertujuan meneroka identiti tempat pelancongan bagi dua buah bandar kecil lama yang terletak di Teluk Intan dan Batu Gajah, Perak. Di antara lokasi pelancongan Kellie’s Castle dan Menara Condong Teluk Intan dipilih sebagai pusat lokasi pengumpulan data primer dalam kalangan pelancong tempatan. Seramai 250 orang responden di Batu Gajah dan 170 orang di Teluk Intan dipilih sebagai sampel kajian. Responden ditemu bual bertujuan untuk mendapatkan pandangan berkaitan identiti bagi kedua-dua lokasi pelancongan. Data yang diperoleh daripada borang soal selidik dan temu bual ringkas dianalisis secara deskriptif menggunakan min, jadual silang dan Khi Kuasa Dua untuk memahami identiti tempat pelancongan tersebut. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa identiti tempat pelancongan di Teluk Intan dan Batu Gajah dikenal pasti sebagai ikon warisan sejarah berbanding dengan ikon pelancongan moden. Emotional intelligence of school principals in managing change: Malaysian perspective

The increasing demands for accountability and school reform continuously challenge the roles of school leaders. Today, school leadership is no longer task driven per se, but emotionally compelling as emotions and change are interlinked at the micro-level of organisational behaviours. The purposes of the study were to examine the levels of Principal Change Leadership Emotional Intelligence (PCLEI) in Malaysian secondary schools and the demographic determinants of PCLEI. Analysis of the survey was performed based on the data of 743 school principals, 2021 senior assistants and 2707 teachers. The findings revealed that, (a) school principals were rated as Excellent in PCLEI; (b) in terms of dimensions, school principals were reported Excellent in Emotional Regulation and Emotional Utilisation, and Good in Emotional Perceiving and Expressing and Emotional Understanding; and (c) PCLEI was reliably related to gender, race, age and seniority but not academic qualification...

Professional learning communities in Peninsular Malaysia: Comparing day secondary school and national religious secondary school

The main aim of the study was to examine and compare the implementation of professional learning communities (PLCs) in Day Secondary School (DSS) and National Religious Secondary School (NRSS) in Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 350 teachers from DSS and 371 from NRSS completed the survey with usable data. The results revealed that, i) both DSS and NRSS achieved the level of Quite Good in PLCs, its dimensions as well as its sub-dimensions; ii) NRSS achieved a higher mean score than DSS in PLCs, Organizational Factor as well as Non-organizational Factor and the differences were significant; iii) both DSS and NRSS achieved a higher mean score in Organization Factor than Non-Organizational Factor; iv) among all the sub-dimensions of PLCs, both DSS and NRSS achieved the highest mean score in Shared Norms and Vision; v) among all the sub-dimensions of PLCs, DSS achieved the lowest mean score in External Support System whereas NRSS achieved the lowest mean score in Structural Support. Tujuan  utama  kajian  ini  adalah  untuk  mengkaji  hubungan  antara  iklim  sekolah  dan kepuasan  kerja  dalam  kalangan  guru  sekolah  menengah.  Tambahan,  kajian  ini  juga bertujuan    mengenal   pasti   pengaruh   iklim   sekolah   yang   paling   dominan   dalam mempengaruhi   kepuasan  kerja  dalam  kalangan  guru.  Kajian  ini  mengunakan  teori ekologi  Bronfenbrenner.   Reka  bentuk  kajian  tinjauan  yang  berbentuk  “cross  sectional” digunakan untuk mengumpulkan  data. The relationship between learning-centred leadership and professional learning community: Evidence from Malaysia

The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between Learning-Centred Leadership (LCL) and Professional Learning Community (PLC) in Malaysian secondary schools. By employing disproportionate stratified sampling, a total of 811 schoolteachers completed the survey. The results revealed that: i) the relationship between LCL and PLC is significant and positive; ii) the correlation between LCL and PLC is strong whereby LCL contributed 54.8% the total variation of PLC; iii) Builds a Learning Vision, Provides Learning Support, Manages the Learning Programme and Modelling are predictors of LCL and iv) Manages the Learning Programme contributed the most to PLC, followed by Modelling, Builds a Learning Vision and Provides Learning Support. The study uncovers the fact that LCL is a good predictor of PLC.
