The diversities of feminine art and the pop cultures in the Islamic world

Abstract

This article questions the symbolic representations of women and their spiritual and physical belongings in contemporary arts. In the Islamic world, there are many pop cultures that produced different symbolisms of feminine images, and used it in different socio political contexts to express symbolic messages. Such symbolisms may express spiritual connotations referring to religious backgrounds, while others may not because artists in the Islamic world represent many social issues from their communities. Such issues are diverse that range from political, social, spiritual as well as high individual issues that are very subjective in nature. Contemporary Middle Eastern social reality into global art in Singapore Biennale

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the artworks of contemporary Middle Eastern artists in Singapore Biennale regarding to the social reality issues. The subjects within the research context were the role of Middle Eastern artists in responding to the issues of social reality and the uniqueness of their artistic representations. The research also looked at the contribution of the artworks within the concept of glocalization that challenged the stereotypical representations of social issues. The methodology used in this research was qualitative content analysis, which categorized the phenomenon of social reality into a coding framework and interpreted their symbolisms according to the Iconography and Iconology theory. Abstract

The Malaysian English syllabi for primary schools, secondary schools, and higher learning institutions focus mainly on the four skills, i.e. listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Among the four skills, writing is the most difficult skill to master, and it becomes harder when using a second language. Because of this, when students write in a second language, it is very important that the feedback they receive are useful and motivating. There are many views on what academics give as feedback and how it is given which will help to motivate and improve the students’ writing. This paper attempts to identify the common practices and styles of giving feedback by academics at a public university in Malaysia. The respondents for this research are students and academics, who were learning and teaching an academic writing module in the university. Kajian ini mcrupakan satu kajian perbandingan teks antara bahasa Arab dengan bahasa Mclayu yang bcrtujuan mencari makna setanding untuk dijadikan model terjemahan. Kajian ini timbul berikutan masalah kualiti terjemahan yang ditawarkan oleh mesin tetjemahan Google ditambah pula dengan faktor ketiadaan mesin terjemahan yang efektif yang dapat mcmbantu usaha penterjemahan buku Arab ke bahasa Melayu. Kajian ini mengfokuskan kepada mengenal pasti data-data korpus Arab-Melayu setanding yang wujud dalam talian terbuka. Data-data mt dikumpulkan, diklasifikasikan dan dinilai mengikut tahap makna kesetandingan. Kajian terjemahan berkomputer ini akan memanfaatkan data-data korpus terbuka yang ditawarkan oleh perkhidmatan atas talian dan laman sesawang sepeni perisian korpus Google, Webc01p, arnbiCo,pus dan Pangkalan Data Bahasa Melayu DBP. Strategi penterjemahan kata tabu dalam novel The Catcher in the Rye

Abstract

Kata tabu merupakan perkataan, frasa dan topik yang boleh menyebabkan penghinaan dan mendatangkan mudarat apabila digunakan dalam khalayak ramai (Qanbar, 2011). Namun, kata tabu sering digunakan dalam penulisan karya sastera. Penterjemahan kata tabu secara literal mendatangkan masalah kerana bertentangan dengan norma masyarakat Malaysia yang mengamalkan aspek kesopanan. Oleh itu, makalah ini meneliti kata tabu dalam novel The Catcher in the Rye oleh J.D. Salinger pada 1951. Versi terjemahannya bertajuk Wira Ladang dan diterjemahkan oleh Zulkifli Ahmad pada 1999. Selain itu, cabaran yang dihadapi dalam menterjemahkan kata tabu juga akan diteliti. Kategori kata tabu oleh Battistella (2005) dimanfaatkan untuk mengelaskan kata tabu. Strategi terjemahan oleh Baker (2011) diaplikasikan dalam analisis data. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan penulisan kata tabu dalam bahasa Inggeris boleh dikategorikan mengikut kategori Battistella (2005), iaitu kata julukan, kata kesat, kata cabul dan kata lucah. St.....
