Infestations by the bagworms Metisa plana and Pteroma pendula for the period 1986-2000 in major oil palm estates managed by Golden Hope Plantation Berhad in peninsular Malaysia
Ho Cheng Tuck, Ibrahim Yusof, Khoo Khay Chong,
Metisa plana Walker and Pteroma pendula Joannis are important pests of the oil palm, Elaeis guineensis Jacquin, which is the primary agricultural crop in Malaysia. Although there is a history of integrated management of the bagworms, information gaps exist with regard to their incidence, biology, dispersion and population dynamics. Such new information is needed to improve the current integrated management of these pests. Analysis of historical records of bagworm infestations over 63 955 ha of oil palm in 69 estates in Peninsular Malaysia showed M. plana and P. pendula to be the primary pests. Infestations were of single or mixed species, and ranged from nil to 7811 ha yr-1. Cumulative infestations were 18 297 ha, 4904 ha and 14 607 ha for single species of P. pendula and M. plana, and for mixed species of P. pendula and M. plana, respectively. This shows P. pendula to be the predominant species, and is attributed to its ability to survive very wet weather (>200 mm rain per month) and .....

A new record from East Malaysia Sphaerolaimus macrocirculus (Nematoda)
Mohd Rosli Norliana, Mohd Long Shabdin, Cheng Ann Chen,
A new record of Sphaerolaimus macrocirculus (Filipjev 1918) in East Malaysian coastal water was described. The species was isolated from the muddy area of Muara Tebas, Sarawak, Malaysia. A total of 47 species of Sphaerolaimus have been reported worldwide. Samples of Sphaerolaimus macrocirculus were previously recorded in the sublittoral mud area of temperate country. S. macrocirculus possesses a stout body (1.1 – 1.6 mm; De Man ratios: a (body length/body width) = 16.8 – 27.5; b (body length/oesophagus length) = 2.3 – 4.3; c (body length/tail length) = 5.6 – 8.6). The circular amphid is very clear and situated at the base of the cephalic capsule. In male, the amphid ranged from 11.3 – 14.3 μm in diameter (mean = 12.7 ± 1.3) and 0.4 c.d. (corresponding diameter). In female, the amphid ranged from 7.2 – 9.4 μm in diameter (mean 7.8 ± 0.9) and 0.2 c.d. The species is characterised by the presence of eight groups of subcephalic setae at the head region and three longer term.....

Dispersion of the bagworms Pteroma pendula and Metisa plana in oil palm
Ho Cheng Tuck, Ibrahim Yusof, Khoo Khay Chong,
An attempt was made to determine optimum sampling unit of between-palm and within-palm distribution of bagworms and their interspecific association distribution in oil palm using aggregation indices or distribution models. The within-frond distribution of bagworms varied significantly within the oil palm crown. Peak bagworm density was recorded between frond numbers 9 and 19. Through polynomial regression, standardised residual and relative net precision analyses, frond number 17 was established as the representative sampling unit for experimental work, and frond numbers 10-19 should be used when a greater precision is required as in life-table construction. A lack of interspecific association suggested these sampling units to be applicable for single and mixed infestations. Evaluation of between-palm dispersion revealed that Taylor’s Power Law gave a more appropriate fit with highly significant r2 values for all categories of assessment. The bagworms were regularly dispersed in oil .....

Literary Canon in the making: a discussion on Malaysian Chinese literary criticism
Seah, Cheng Ta
The literary criticisms of Malayan Chinese literature from the end of 20th century to 21st century is known to be the “golden generation”. However, there are still voices on the eleven writers if they are able to portray the overall development of contemporary Malayan Chinese Literature. There are two perspectives that can be discussed. Firstly, are the essays wellrepresentedto be incorporated into the compendium? Secondly, are the writers in the compendium able to provide insightful thoughts, or even lead in the narrations of Malayan Chinese literature?  ..

A critical review of the development of sinology in the western world
Cheng,Dennis Kat Hung
This paper critically reviews the development of sinology in the western world since the seventeenth century, with particular reference to Europe and North America. It focuses on three main thematic areas—scientific positivism and philology, translation and interpretation, and history and philosophy—discussing and parsing the wide variety of scholarship across disciplines. Observing and responding to the scholarship of individual scholars, the author examines the cultural contexts and intellectual characteristics of western sinology, with a view to assessing its scholarly and philosophical impact on East Asian scholars. The lesson to be learnt is that while western sinology offers opportunities and stimuli for creatively rethinking our exploration and understanding of the multiple dimensions of China in intercultural terms, East Asian sinologists must deepen their knowledge of their own history and culture in order to be effective interlocutors in the ongoing dialogues.  ..

Tri-dimensional relationship between lean, perceived service quality and patient satisfaction in public lean hospitals Malaysia
Ng, Annie Cheng San
The aim of the study is to examine the tri-dimensional relationship between Lean, perceived service quality, and patient satisfaction in public Lean hospitals, in Malaysia. This study employs quantitative approach to collect feedback from 48 public Lean hospitals in Malaysia. Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling was employed to investigate the proposed measurement model and structural model. The findings showed that overall synergic effects of Lean practices particularly in the Strategy and alignment, Behaviour and engagement, and Process management have significant and positive relationship with perceived service quality. Additionally, perceived service quality has been found to have significant and positive relationship with patient satisfaction. However, none of the Lean practices has a significant impact on patient satisfaction. Such weak direct relationship between Lean and patient satisfaction is due to the lack of mediating effect contribution. Hence, med.....
