Abstract
There has been an increase in the students’ enrolment to the private schools across Malaysia. The shift in the parents’ preference on the selection of secondary school has been predominantly attributed to the dissatisfaction with the current school education system. Subsequently, this study attempts to study the factors that affect parents’ preferences in selecting the secondary school for their children. Four factors namely school characteristics, school environment, social influences and the parents-administration-teachers (PAT) relationship that are related to school choice were examined in this study. 203 representative elements were drawn using judgmental sampling technique and structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis was used to analyse the data collected. The findings showed that all factors significantly affect the parents’ preferences in selecting the secondary school for their children. Comparatively, the effect of school environment on the parents’ preferences .....

Abstract
Entrepreneurship generally refers to small business ownership which implies quality of innovation and initiative in creating a new venture. Previous studies on entrepreneurship have indicated that pull and push factors in motivation and the environmental influences are the two main dynamic aspects that prompt women into their decision in creating their own business. In the Malaysian context, some women music teachers have ventured into establishing music businesses after several years of contribution in music teaching. What are the pull factors and influences that prompted these women music teachers into music business ownership after some years of music teaching? This study aims to examine and explore the pull motivational and influencing factors of why women music teachers endeavour in setting up music studios, music schools and entering into small music business ownership. In-depth interviews were conducted with 3 women music entrepreneurs and data was analysed for emerging themes. .....

Abstract
Our study on Jimmy Boyle (1922-1971) has been one that attempts to unfold the many facets of his creativity against the single-dimensional image of a patriotic songwriter. His sentiments as songwriters of many kinds, a jazz musician, and a cultural enthusiast have been proven through his different branches of work that are at times seem contrasting with each other in compositional styles. As a result of a long term archiving project, this paper reveals the entire set of handwritten artefact left after his death in 1971 and was recovered in Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2014, namely some 177 items of Boyle’s manuscript that contains unpublished, published compositions as well as hand copy of others’ compositions. Main methods employed were that of the construct of taxonomy, and some cross-examination of the items covered within the catalogue mooted by the concept of intertextuality. I argue that Tokumaru’s concept of intertextuality is viable in examining a large number of Boyle’.....

Abstract

Abstract
Scott Simon (2008) describes jazz improvisation as an act of _reproduction of music_, _reinterpretation of compositions_, and _quotations of melodies_, while Paul Berliner (1994) puts it as _reworking precomposed material_. In contrast, Lee Brown highlights the spirit of _non conformism_ embedded in jazz playing, so that the musical outcome of jazz is _unanticipated_, and _nondeterministic_ (Brown, 2000). In 2012, I proposed _heteronomy_ as one of the defining features of jazz. How would these characters of jazz appear in the light of John Cage_s thoughts? If jazz is an art of quoting rather than creating, then that it was a genre of _distaste_ to Cage becomes understandable. Cage_s relationship to jazz and/or improvisation is more than a mild rejection. Sabine Feisst (2009) refers to it as an _unresolved relationship_, while for Rebecca Kim (2012) there is a _separate togetherness_ between Cage and jazz. In coaching Malaysian students to embrace jazz, needs arise for a clear understan.....

Abstract
This aim of the research is to investigate the intersection of cultural identity in defining the being and becoming of Malaysian Chinese. The boundaries of differences and ethnic classifications were blurred through accumulated and intersected layers in the context of everyday here-and-now living experiences. The research traced the history of the migration and settlement of the Chinese in Malaysia as background, the overlapping and intersection of the culture identity was examined through the theory of identity with two different tendencies: one that is stable, unified and homogeneous, and the other being fluid and evolving. The discussion follows the Yuval-Davis’ theory of two Models of Belonging. The key artists in this research are: Taraneh Hemami, Redza Piyadasa, Wong Hoy Cheong, Chong Siew Ying and Yee I-Lann, who centered their production around issues of identity-formation and the nature of the diasporic life. The reference artworks presented here suggest the fluid nature of .....
