A phenomenological study of university reading: the struggling EFL readers perspective

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to explore the cognitive representations of the six struggling EFL readers studying at a private university in Malaysia to obtain a rich description of their lived experience. To this end, a qualitative research design was selected to answer a central research question and four sub-questions. Using the transcendental phenomenological approach, the research instruments included the researcher as the primary human instrument, the research participants who were the co-researchers, a research assistant, a reading strategies questionnaire, a motivation for reading questionnaire, as well as participants’ drawings. A group of six EFL students, who struggled with reading academic texts in their respective content areas of study at a private university, were selected by purposeful sampling. Data analysis showed that the struggling readers had reading difficulties and struggled to cope with unfamiliar and difficult content area texts, saw the benefits of group read.....

Detection of porcine based materials in processed food using polymerase chain reaction method

Abstract

The detection of halal adulteration in processed food, particularly the presence of porcine based material, be it human or animal food is very important to safeguard the interest of Muslim consumers. Many techniques have been developed to determine such adulteration which can ascertain the halal status of food products. In this paper, the presence of porcine based materials in few processed foods namely meat products, candy products, and animal feeds obtained from Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, Malaysia were screened by using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method. Findings revealed that all processed meat samples showed a positive result of the presence of porcine DNA. A similar result was also obtained for a few samples of animal feeds and candy products. Secondary school students perceptions of classroom environment in Malaysia and China

Abstract

Kajian ini bertujuan membandingkan persepsi pelajar sekolah menengah tentang persekitaran bilik darjah di Malaysia dan China. Penyelidikan kuantitatif ini menggunakan instrumen Student Perceptions of Classroom Quality (SPOCQ) untuk mengumpul data. Sejumlah 260 orang pelajar dari tiga buah sekolah menengah di Tanjung Malim, Malaysia dan 351 orang pelajar dari empat buah sekolah menengah di Wilayah Feng, China telah dipilih secara rawak sebagai responden kajian ini. Analisis deskriptif dan analisis inferensi digunakan untuk menganalisis data yang dikumpul. Analisis deskriptif menggambarkan tahap persepsi pelajar sekolah menengah di Malaysia dan China terhadap persekitaran bilik darjah dalam lima faktor iaitu daya tarikan, cabaran, pilihan, pengertian dan efikasi kendiri akademik. Determining attrition of writing skills among Chinese EFL learners

Abstract

So far, little research about writing has been said to have occurred in an EFL environment compared to an ESL environment. This study anchors on an EFL environment found in China. In connection with the EFL environment is the question of writing attrition. The main thrust of the study is to investigate if writing attrition occurred after a long period of nonuse by tertiary students. In addition, attempts are made to link writing attrition to levels of motivation and social activities experienced by the learners. To obtain data, we resorted to standardized writing tests used by the tertiary institution and also developed a questionnaire to investigate the levels of motivation and social activities. To give credibility to the writing instrument used to gauge attrition, test validation is also carried out to lay the fundamentals for the discussion of attrition in writing. With the development of globalization and the increasingly fierce competition in the world market, most companies are seeking new business opportunities on a global scale. The development of information technology promotes the use of social media. The increase in a large number of online users makes social media an emerging purchase channel. For companies, how to use the advantages of social media to attract consumers to buy the company's products and services has become one of the most important challenges. In this light, this research aims to determine the factors that influence the purchase behaviour of consumers on social media. This article studies four basic elements, namely brand awareness, social media word of mouth, social media advertising and social media influencers. Abstract

Penyelidikan arkeologi di Pengkalan Bujang, Kedah pada awalnya telah dijalankan secara sistematik oleh Quaritch- Wales sejak tahun 1936 hingga 1937 lagi di bawah tajaan Greater India Research Committee yang berpusat di Calcutta, India. Antara tapak yang telah diekskavasi oleh Quaritch-Wales ialah Tapak 18, Tapak 19, Tapak 21, Tapak 22 dan Tapak 23. Beberapa jumpaan penting telah berjaya ditemui semasa ekskavasi yang dijalankan oleh Quaritch-Wales yang mana antaranya ialah arca agama, serpihan seramik, relikuari dan pelbagai artifak yang lain. Alastair Lamb juga telah menjalankan penyelidikan beliau di Pengkalan Bujang di mana beliau lebih memberi fokus kepada jumpaan kaca dan pelbagai jenis manik di Pengkalan Bujang. Antara pendapat beliau ialah kaca yang banyak ditemui di Pengkalan Bujang, Kedah berasal dari Timur Tengah dan berkemungkinan juga kaca ini merupakan kaca yang diguna semula untuk menghasilkan manik kaca monokrom.
